ON CAMPUS Canfield's Linnelli is set for sectional

Niles High graduate Cedric Hudson will play basketball at Mercyhurst.
CANFIELD -- University of Notre Dame junior Meghan Linnelli, a Canfield High graduate, will compete in the USA Speedo Sectional Championships Wednesday through Saturday at the University of Indiana.
Linnelli will swim in the 50-, 100- and 200-meter freestyle events and is training for the meet with the Youngstown Extreme Swimming Club team, which is coached by Matt Anderson.
As a freshman, Linnelli, a two-year letterwinner at Notre Dame, helped set a meet record in the 400 free relay (3 minutes, 33.72 seconds) and 800 free relay (7:53.38) at the Dennis Stark Relays.
She qualified her freshman and sophomore years in the 50 and 100 free races for the Big East Championships.
Her career-best times as a freshman were 24.86 in the 50 free, 52.69 in the 100 free and 1:55.37 in the 200 free.
Linnelli was selected to the Big East Academic All-Star team with a 3.4 grade-point-average and she made the Dean's List at Notre Dame where she is majoring in psychology.
Mercyhurst
Cedric Hudson, a Niles High graduate, has been accepted to Mercyhurst College where he'll play basketball.
"I played basketball for Niles my freshman and sophomore years," said Hudson. "I didn't go out my junior year and didn't make the cut last year."
The past two years, Hudson has worked on fundamentals such as ball-handling, dribbling and shooting. His improvement in those skills were some of the reasons the Mercyhurst coaches awarded him a partial basketball scholarship.
A 6-foot, 220-pound athlete, Hudson would like to play point guard for Mercyhurst.
He was a two-year letterwinner for Niles' football team and started at defensive end for the Red Dragons and had six sacks last year.
Hudson also ran track and cross country for the Red Dragons.
Slippery Rock
Sarah Maniarelli, Phil Butch and Justice Schweiss were among Slippery Rock University's 159 student-athletes who attained Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Scholar Athlete status for the 2004-05 school year.
Maniarelli, a soccer player from Howland High who will be a sophomore, was also named to the spring semester Director of Athletics honor roll, which recognizes student-athletes with a 3.5 or higher grade point average.
The PSAC Scholar-Athletes, those with at least a 3.25 GPA, included Butch, a Lakeview High graduate who will be a junior on the baseball team and Schweiss, a Sharon native who will be a senior on the golf team.
Westminster
Kylene Hoch, a Hubbard High graduate, will continue her volleyball career at Westminster.
Hoch, a libero, holds school records for digs in a match (47), season (612) and career (762). She earned Trumbull Athletic Conference first team and all-district honors and was a third team all-state.
She was a four year letterwinner in track and field. A National Honor Society student, she plans to major in secondary education.
Kristin Skelley, a Greenville High graduate, will also play volleyball at Westminster.
An outside hitter for the Trojans, she posted 163 kills, 13 blocks and a 95 percent serve percentage as a senior.
She was twice an All-Mercer County Conference selection, earning third team honors as a sophomore and second team as a junior, and was a Region 5 All-Star first team choice as a senior.
Skelley also played basketball, tennis and ran track.
A National Honor Society student, she plans to major in political science.
