MiniPage activities meet many state and national educational standards. This week's standards: Students understand science, technology and technological design. Students are able to distinguish between natural objects and objects made by humans (Science: Science and Technology)
Activities:
1. Make a set of airplane trading cards. Draw a picture of the plane on the front of the card. Write a sentence about the plane on the back of the card. Share your cards with friends.
2. Make a collage of newspaper words and pictures that are related to airplanes and air travel.
3. Which airplanes were designed (a) mainly to carry
passengers, (b) for the military
(c) for the space program, (d) to use rotors, and (e) to fly without using an engine?
4. Find a newspaper story about air travel. Note the type of airplane in the story. Write a paragraph explaining how that airplane uses technology and research from the early planes shown in today's MiniPage.
5. Use resource books and the Internet to learn more about one of the planes in this issue. Use these questions to guide your research: When was the plane invented? Who was the major inventor of the plane? What was unique about the plane, and how was it different from other planes at that time? How successful was it? How long was it flown? What happened to it; why doesn't it exist today?
