2 Pennsylvania troopers receive honors
HERSHEY, Pa. (AP) -- Two troopers from western Pennsylvania, one who subdued an assailant and another who prevented a suicidal woman from jumping off a Pittsburgh bridge, were among those recognized for outstanding work.
Trooper Edward M. Malloy, 37, of the Greensburg troop, who authorities said subdued a man who killed his wife and shot another person, was named Trooper of the Year.
Malloy "has demonstrated an uncanny ability to develop informants, locate witnesses and generate investigative leads," State Police Commissioner Jeffrey B. Miller said at a ceremony Friday.
Also recognized was Trooper James H. Boyd, 39, of the Pittsburgh troop, one of 11 troopers awarded the State Police Medal of Honor, the department's highest honor.
Boyd grabbed a woman as she let go of a railing on the Smithfield Street bridge in May and hung on to her forearm even as she tried to break free of his grip.
