Workshop for minority doctoral candidates

YOUNGSTOWN -- A workshop designed to provide information for minorities on requirements and preparation for doctoral study will be from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday in the McKay Auditorium of Youngstown State University's Beeghly College of Education.
Representatives from 10 regional universities are expected to give presentations on doctoral programs offered at their institutions. The program also will include a breakout session where prospective doctoral students can talk with the presenters and a panel discussion with current minority faculty members and minority doctoral students.
Leon Stennis, coordinator of diversity initiatives at YSU, said there is a national shortage of minorities pursuing doctoral degrees to become tenured professors in higher education.
"One of the purposes of this workshop is to do what we can to change that," he said. "We have to start with university and community recognition of the problem."
Only 12.9 percent of YSU's tenured or full-time professors are minorities, Stennis said.
