Man sued over unemployment pay

YOUNGSTOWN -- The Ohio Department of Job and Family Services has filed a suit against a Youngstown businessman accusing him of failing to make required unemployment compensation payments for his company.
Special counsel for the Ohio Attorney General's office, on behalf of the Ohio Bureau of Employment Services, filed suit in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court against Michael Clarett of Youngstown.
The suit, filed in late June, said Clarett, who has a business called Myke's Same Day Delivery, a local package delivery company located at 25 E. Boardman St., has failed to comply with the state's unemployment laws and also has failed to report and pay contributions or taxes, forfeitures and or interest.
Clarett also is the Ohio Secretary of State's field representative for northeast Ohio.
The amount the state says Clarett owes is $26,629 plus interest.
The suit adds Clarett was an employer subject to provisions of the unemployment compensation laws.
The suit also contains a copy of a letter from John F. Herold, interim chief of the Bureau of Unemployment Compensation Tax, collection section, dated May 19 and sent to Clarett saying that if he didn't pay the amount by May 29, civil action would be taken against him.
The Vindicator made several attempts Wednesday to reach Clarett for a response. A taped message said the telephone number at his business was being checked for trouble. A taped message said his home phone number was temporarily disconnected.
