Cincinnati Women's Open: MASON -- Top-seeded Patty Schnyder and second-seeded Vera Zvonareva won in straight sets to lead five seeded players into the second round. Schnyder easily advanced with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Caroline Wozniacki. Zvonareva, who lost to Lindsay Davenport in last year's final, beat Meghann Shaughnessy 6-3, 6-3. Third-seeded Jelena Jankovic, fourth-seeded Daniela Hantuchova and sixth-seeded Ai Sugiyama also won, but fifth-seeded Marion Bartoli and No. 7 Anna-Lena Gronefeld were eliminated. Sybille Bammer became the first qualifier to advance in the $170,000 Tier III tournament. Sugiyama beat Lindsay Lee-Waters 7-5, 6-2, and Akiko Morigami stopped qualifier Cory Ann Avants. Bartoli lost to American qualifier Bethanie Mattek 1-6, 6-4, 7-6 (0), and left without speaking to the media. Gronefeld was beaten by Indian teenager Sania Mirza 6-4, 6-3, and Bammer upset stopped the Czech Republic's Iveta Benesova 7-5, 6-3. Mattek will play France's Camille Pin, who beat Luxembourg's Anne Kremer 7-5, 6-2. Hantuchova easily eliminated Lilia Osterloh 6-1, 6-2 to earn a second-round matchup with Chanda Rubin. Jankovic overcame qualifier Maria Emilia Salerni 4-6, 6-3, 6-0.
RCA Championships: INDIANAPOLIS -- Veteran Jan-Michael Gambill defeated Donald Young in straight sets in the opening round, ending the 15-year-old's bid for his first professional victory. Gambill advanced to a second round match against doubles partner Taylor Dent with a 7-6 (10), 6-2 victory over the teenager from Atlanta. Jonas Bjorkman, once No. 4 on the ATP tour and out of the Top 100 this year, advanced to the second round. The 33-year-old Swede, who won the RCA Championships in 1997, took a small step to moving up the rankings by defeating Lukas Dlouhy of the Czech Republic 7-6 (3), 6-1. In other matches Tuesday, American players had a tough time. Giovanni Lapentti of Ecuador beat American qualifier Mashiska Washington 7-6 (3), 6-3; George Bastl of Switzerland defeated American Jeff Morrison 6-4, 6-4; Ryan Phau of Germany beat American Amer Delic 6-4, 6-7 (4), 6-3; and Israel's Noam Okum eliminated American Brendan Evans, 6-3, 6-3.
Priority Telecom Open: AMERSFOORT, Netherlands -- Third-seeded Nicolas Massu of Chile defeated France's Nicolas Thomann 6-4, 6-2 to advance to the second round. In other first-round action, Dennis van Scheppingen retired with a wrist injury after losing the first set 6-0 to another Dutch qualifier, Melle van Gemerden; Dutchman Raemon Sluiter rallied to defeat Peru's Luis Horna 6-7 (7) 6-3, 7-5; and Italy's Daniele Bracciali beat the Czech Republic's Radim Zitko 7-6 (3), 6-2. Also, Spain's Alex Calatrava topped Argentina's Sergio Roitman 3-6, 6-3, 7-5, and Costa Rican qualifier Joan Antonio Marin defeated Francesco Aldi of Italy 7-6 (5), 6-1.
Mercedes Cup: STUTTGART, Germany -- Gustavo Kuerten's comeback from two hip operations faltered when American qualifier Hugo Armando beat the three-time French Open champion 6-4, 6-1 in the first round. Without a win on tour this year, Armando needed just 80 minutes to roll past the erratic Brazilian, who was playing his first match since the French Open two months ago. Kuerten, who hired a new coach during his layoff, said he still expects to return to the top when he's healthy. His record fell to 2-6 since he returned from his latest operation in April. Rafael Nadal, riding a 29-match winning streak on clay, is the top-seeded player at the $737,000 tournament and plays Armando today. In second-round matches, France's Gilles Simon upset eighth-seeded Filippo Volandri of Italy 6-3, 2-6, 6-4; and Argentina's Mariano Zabaleta topped ninth-seeded Olivier Rochus of Belgium 4-6, 6-2, 6-3.
Palermo Invitational: PALERMO, Sicily -- Top-seeded Silvia Farina Elia retired with a right shoulder injury during her first-round match. Farina Elia was trailing Bulgaria's Tszvetana Pironkova 7-6 (3), 2-0 when she was forced to quit. Second-seeded Flavia Pennetta, who finished second last year, beat Antonella Serra Zanetti 6-2, 7-5, and defending champion Anabel Medina Garrigues advanced with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Denisa Chladkova.
