CHAMPION SCHOOLS Board renews contract of superintendent Hood

The first day of school for the 2005-06 school year will be Aug. 29.
CHAMPION -- Champion Board of Education has renewed the contract for superintendent Pam Hood.
At its Monday meeting, the board approved giving Hood another five-year pact. She was hired to serve as district superintendent in 1995.
Financial details were not available at the meeting.
In other business, the board decided to make improvements as it can to district properties. The improvements, approved in April, will be done as money becomes available, district officials said.
The board will patch holes in all parking lots for the three schools instead of repaving those lots. Put on hold will be renovating bleachers at the district's stadium, buying a new school bus, and purchasing a new piano at the high school.
As the district's cash flow gets better, the improvements and purchases will be made, district officials said.
Group Testing Programs
The board also approved the final reading of revisions to the district's Group Testing Programs. The board said it believes a program of group testing can provide a meaningful source of intervention about the adopted curriculum and overall student achievement.
This type of testing helps to evaluate strengths and weaknesses of current curriculum, compares the students' achievement with students nationally as a means to evaluate student growth, provides a degree of diagnostic instructional information for teachers, and gives general information about a student's probable aptitude for school-related tasks, the board said.
High school fees
The board also approved the fee schedule for Champion High School for the 2005-06 school year.
Art 1, 2, and 3 classes and senior studio art will cost $25 instead of $15. Work Family 1, 2, and Nutrition & amp; Wellness classes were raised $1, and the rest of the fees will remain the same as last year's. A new course was added to the curriculum: TV News at a cost of $15. The school year begins Aug. 29.
Board president Linda Ashelman wanted to remind the public that todayand Wednesday between 6:30 and 9 p.m., the district, in conjunction with the Ohio School Boards Association, will conduct a telephone survey to get residents' thoughts on school district matters.
The survey information will be used to update the district's Strategic Plan for School Improvement. The survey will take between seven and 10 minutes to complete and all information will remain confidential.
The next board meeting will be at 7 p.m. Aug. 22.
