BAZETTA -- Bazetta fire and police departments and Wal-Mart Elm Road store have planned a free safety day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. There will be a kids' bicycle safety rodeo and free bike helmets for rodeo participants, child car seat inspection and installation, landing of a medical helicopter and a display of firetrucks and ambulances. Also participating are Mahoning Valley Safe Kids, American Red Cross, Trumbull County Health Department, a STAT MedEvac helicopter and the Ohio Department of Natural Resources.
Mosquito spray date set
NILES -- The city health department says mosquito spraying will be after 6 p.m. Wednesday. If it rains, the alternate spray date is Thursday. People with breathing problems should stay indoors with windows closed, pets should be taken indoors and food should not be prepared or left outside during the spraying period.
Horse show gallops into Canfield in September
CANFIELD -- The Northern Ohio Quarter Horse Futurity Show, which is approved by the American Quarter Horse Association, will take place Sept. 24 and 25 at the Canfield Fairgrounds. The show will test horses' abilities in different classes and events, including jumping, reining and barrel racing. Competitors earn points that translate into awards and cash prizes at the end of the year. Exhibitors and horses can also qualify for the AQHA or American Quarter Horse Youth Association World Championship shows. The show is one of 2,700 approved by AQHA internationally. Amateur radio course
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Mahoning Valley Amateur Radio Association will conduct a one-day amateur radio course at 9 a.m. Sept. 10 at the ITT Technical Institute, 1030 N. Meridian Road. This all-day class will help students learn basic radio theory in preparation for taking a ham radio license exam, which will be given the same day. Students successfully passing this exam will earn an entry-level amateur radio license from the Federal Communications Commission. The course is free, but students will need to purchase a study guide for $19.95 that they will be required to study before the day of the class. The fee for the exam is $14, which will be collected at the time of the examination. The deadline for registering for the class is July 27.
