Wharmby, Livi Steel post opening-round victories



Wharmby ripped Brunswick 9-1, while Livi beat Stark County Stars 5-1.
STRUTHERS -- Wharmby used a pair of three run innings early and went on to defeat the Brunswick Demons 9-1 on Saturday's first day of the Connie Mack state tournament at Cene Park.
Lou Kopachy had a double, a single and three RBIs, while Josh Fyffe and Beau Fisher added two hits each for Wharmby. John Warren added a pair of RBIs in support of Jim Jaskowak, who allowed one run on three hits with six strikeouts.
Livi Steel 5, Stark County Stars 1
Both teams managed just two hits, but a three run home run by Manoli Pahoulis in the bottom of the third inning lifted Livi Steel.
Jake Abbott had seven strikeouts in the win, out-pitching Sam Capitella. Capitella had five strikeouts in the losing effort. Andy Szinc had a triple for the losers.
Other games
Kevin Mann of Piqua American Legion tossed a one-hitter with seven strikeouts in a 3-0 win over the Cleveland Panthers 3-0. Losing pitcher Steve Grife allowed two earned runs and had 13 strikeouts in the loss.
Robert Shaw had two hits and two RBIs as the Ohio Hurricanes defeated the Ohio Jaguars 5-1.
Mentor Post 352 shut out the Ohio Eagles 5-0. Tony Evanko went the first five innings for the win, while Brett Gibson and Rick Sullivan had two hits each.
The Ohio Warhawks also won with a 5-0 shutout of the Diamond Dog Bulldogs. J.B. Shuck tossed a two-hitter with 12 strikeouts for the winners, while J.J. Hoover also fanned 12 in the losing effort. Karl Futz had two hits for the winners.
Buckeye Warriors were out-hit 10-5 but still defeated Troy American Legion Post 43, 3-2. The Warriors outfielders threw out Troy runners at home, third and second base in the game. David Hammond had a pair of triples and a single for the winners.
Tyler Tufts hit a two-run home run and a two-RBI double as the JL Clevelanders defeated Pierce Team Sports 8-6.
Ohio Blaze scored three runs in the sixth and four times in the top of the seventh to come from behind and defeat Fielders Choice 12-11. The Blaze had 18 hits and Fielders Choice 16.
Brandon Panek was a single shy of the cycle as Team Ohio defeated Jefferson Post 152, 7-3. Panek had a double in the fourth, a triple in the sixth and a solo home run in the seventh.
Buckeye Academy scored three times in the top of the ninth to defeat Andy's 9ers 6-3. Grant Beadling went the distance for the win with eight strikeouts. Derrick Crawford hit a three-run home run for the game-winner.
