President of citizens group shares her Warren landfill experiences

GIRARD -- The president of a Warren grassroots organization told members of the Mahoning River Consortium about several problems that have arisen over the years with a landfill in that area.
Debbie Roth, president of Our Lives Count, shared her experiences with group members during Friday's meeting at Girard's Multi-Generational Center.
Several of the group members are concerned about what Roth went through with Warren Recycling/Warren Hills landfill because Total Waste Logistics has applied for a license from the Girard City Health Department to locate a construction and demolition debris landfill on 19.9 acres off U.S. Route 422.
Roth told members that despite the landfill in her area now being closed, the Warren construction, demolition and debris landfill has about 60 million gallons of standing leachate and is a health hazard, she noted. Leachate is water that comes in contact with debris and can create hydrogen sulfide.
"Leachate is a concern because this proposed landfill here would be 190 feet from the Mahoning River," Roth said.
A citizens group, Girard United Against Ruinous Dumping, has formed to fight the proposed landfill.
The proposed landfill would be adjacent to the Creekside Golf Dome.
Mayor James Melfi has said that he is against the proposed landfill.
