Greek culinary delights highlight yearly festival

It's a cultural fest, but packed with food galore.
WARREN -- The annual St. Demetrios Grecian Festival opens Wednesday for a five-day run.
Located at the St. Demetrios Community Center at 3223 Atlantic St., the festival prides itself on its homemade Greek food such as the gyro and souvlaki (shish-kabob) sandwiches; and pastries such as baklava, kataifi and galatoboureko.
Inside the main hall, a dining area is available where church volunteers work to prepare dinners featuring lamb shank, chicken riganati, moussaka and pastitsio.
Also available in the main hall is the Kafeneon or the Greek coffee house which serves Greek coffee, iced coffee, bougatsa and ek-mek.
New this year is the mezethes (Greek hors d'oeuvres) booth, which will be on the midway. It will feature spanakopita, tiropita, stuffed grape leaves and keftethes (Greek meatballs).
Baklava sundaes and loukoumathes (Greek doughnuts) also will be available on the midway.
There will be live entertainment nightly with Greek bands and dance troupes from Youngstown, Pittsburgh and also St. Demetrios.
For the kids, there will be rides and games on the midway.
Admission and parking are free. The hours are Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday, 4 to 11 p.m.; Friday and Saturday, 4 p.m. to midnight. Special dining room hours Sunday are from 1 to 11 p.m.
