CAMPUS NOTES In the spotlight

OHIO UNIVERSITY Athens, Ohio
Recent graduate Joel Vertanen of Canfield was honored by the Ohio University College of Business with the John E. Reynolds Award. The award is given to recognize outstanding student achievement for an undergraduate who is planning a career in the insurance industry.
Vertanen is an accounting/finance double major and has a GPA of 3.96. He is a member of Alpha Lamda Delta, Beta Alpha Psi, Beta Gamma Sigma and Golden Key Honoraries.
While at school, Vertanen has interned for Ernst & amp; Young in Chicago. He has also studied overseas as a participant in the Global Competitiveness Program in Thessaloniki, Greece. Vertanen now works for Ernst & amp; Young in Chicago in their Investigative and Dispute Services group.
COLLEGE OF WOOSTER, Wooster, Ohio
Leslie Smith, a senior English major and a Boardman resident, has been chosen to receive the 2005 Becky DeWine Scholarship. The award, which provides financial support for a summer journalism internship, was established in 1995 by Michael and Frances DeWine to honor the life of their daughter, Becky, who was killed in an automobile accident shortly after graduating from Wooster in 1993.
Smith is interning at The Vindicator as a copy editor. A feature writer with The Wooster Voice, Smith also served as a copy editor for Scot-Free, a magazine produced in Wooster's Writing for Magazines and Journalism class.
UNIVERSITY OF AKRON
Colin Clemente, a 2004 Warren JFK graduate, has been invited to become a member of Phi Eta Sigma, the National Freshman Scholastic Honor Society. The honor society recognizes and honors first-year college freshmen on their achievements. Phi Eta Sigma is the oldest freshman honor society in the United States and was established at the University of Akron in 1940.
YOUNGSTOWN STATE UNIVERSITY
The United States Achievement Academy recently named student Nikki Perkins a United States National Collegiate Award winner in Dental Hygiene/Allied Health.
Perkins received the award from William J. Blake, YSU's director of Student Diversity Programs.
She will appear in the nationally published United States Achievement Academy Official Collegiate Yearbook.
The Academy recognizes less than 10 percent of all U.S. college students for academic performance, leadership, interest, aptitude, motivation and dependability.
