YOUNGSTOWN -- The Mahoning Valley Historical Society is sponsoring three-day interactive camps centered on local history:
UTuesday to Thursday: Children finishing first through third grades will explore Greystone Crafts. Campers will learn about the arts and crafts movement through activities recreating elements of the museum.
UJuly 26-28: Children finishing fourth through seventh grades will wonder "If I Could Talk To...." Campers will explore the tools and techniques of oral history, and learn how to apply these methods to collecting family history.
All camps run from 10 a.m. to noon each day and are $20 for society members and $25 for nonmembers.

Helping families
YOUNGSTOWN -- American Red Cross Mahoning Chapter, serving Hubbard, Liberty, Girard and all of Mahoning County, is introducing a new program to families called Family Caregiving.
The course can help prepare family members to take on various responsibilities and challenges that may arise while caring for an elderly parent or grandparent living in the home.
The first two-hour class will introduce participants to general caregiving skills and caring for loved ones with Alzheimer's disease or dementia. Call the chapter for more information or to register at (330) 726-6063.
First aid course
BOARDMAN -- American Red Cross Mahoning Chapter is offering CPR/AED/first aid instructor training July 25, 28 and 29 at the training facility across from the Davis Family YMCA in Boardman. The training will help develop the skills and experience to teach CPR, first aid and a variety of other courses to all ages.
Class size is limited. Course fee is $111 per participant and includes all materials. To register, call (330) 726-6063.
Potty time
Though seldom listed as one of the joys of summer, potty training is often one of its bare necessities.
Warmer weather, lighter clothes, longer days and increased vacation time -- not to mention the incentive of getting your child ready for preschool by fall -- prompt more parents to attempt toilet training during the summer than any other season.
