$6M for Girard dam
GIRARD -- The U.S. House has passed its version of the Water Resources Development Act, which includes $6 million for fixing Girard's dam. The Senate still has to pass its version, then there will be a conference committee to iron out any differences. The actual dollars also must be approved by the Energy and Water Appropriations Committee. Since 2001, Girard has tried to find the money to repair or breach Lower Girard Lakes Dam, in response to an Ohio Department of Natural Resources directive. The possible $6 million was announced by U.S. Rep. Tim Ryan of Niles, D-17th, along with $150,000 for Hubbard Township for study and design of flooding control of Little Yankee Run.

AUSTINTOWN -- After 42 years of directing Austintown Fitch High School's band, Larry Snell has retired. Woman stabbed in arm
YOUNGSTOWN -- A Forestview Avenue woman was treated at St. Elizabeth Health Center for a stab wound in the arm after an argument with her former girlfriend Thursday night. Veronica Catley, 34, told police the woman came to her house and argued with her before stabbing her once with a knife she pulled from her waistband.
Track and field event
HOWLAND -- Howland Township Summer Youth Sport & amp; Recreation Program camps are scheduled from 9 a.m. to 12 noon Monday through Friday at Howland Middle School. This is a track and field event for ages 6-13 and athletic attire and athletic shoes are recommended. Registration forms are at the Howland schools and township administration building, cost is $20 for residents and $35 for nonresidents. Checks are payable to Summer Youth Sport & amp; Rec Program. Zero-tolerance force
The Mahoning County OVI (Operating a Vehicle Impaired) Task Force will conduct patrols for OVI violations today and Sunday. The patrol will cover Youngstown, Austintown, Boardman, Milton, Green, Springfield and Smith and Beaver townships. Youngstown, Austintown, Goshen, Milton, Springfield, Smith and Beaver police departments will participate, as well as the Mahoning County Sheriff's Office. Police agencies will have additional officers on patrol, enforcing zero tolerance for those not wearing safety belts.
Woman suffers wounds
YOUNGSTOWN -- A 24-year-old Evanston Avenue woman sustained cuts to her neck when an unidentified man attempted to strangle her with barbed wire early Thursday, police said. The woman told police that the man, who wore a tight-fitting black ski mask, dirty white T-shirt and black jeans, had attacked her as she was leaving to walk her dog, which bit the suspect on his right thigh. She also noted that the suspect was not her former boyfriend, William Riley Mayor Jr., a fugitive who was arrested July 12 but released on bond. The report said the woman has a restraining order against Mayor and their case is due in court July 20.
Gunlock giveaway
WARREN -- The National Shooting Sports Foundation is distributing free cable-style gunlocks and educational materials as part of the Project ChildSafe initiative to promote firearm safety in the home. Distribution will take place on the following dates:
U2 to 8 p.m. today at Giant Eagle Grocery Store, 7229 Warren-Sharon Road in Brookfield, with Brookfield Police Department.
U11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday at Giant Eagle, 8202 E. Market St. in Howland, with Howland Township Police Department.
U3 to 5 p.m. Monday at Girard Police Department, 100 N. Market St. in Girard.
Road resurfacing
McDONALD -- The village will begin its road resurfacing project on Monday. Roads scheduled to be repaved are:
UPennsylvania Avenue from Marshall Road to Fifth Street.
USeventh Street from McDonald Avenue to Ohio Avenue.
UIowa Avenue from Seventh Street to Sixth Street.
UFifth Street from Utah Avenue to Illinois Avenue.
The village also is taking applications for fire chief through July 29. Applications can be picked up or dropped off at the Municipal Building Monday through Friday between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.
