YOUNGSTOWN -- A 12-year-old West Dennick Avenue boy and his mother contacted police Wednesday to report that a white male with gray hair and a full beard tried to grab the boy near their home.
The boy, who was attempting to re-enter his home when the bus to summer school did not pick him up, said a man wearing jeans and a brown coat tried to grab him, according to the report.
The boy told police he had seen the same man taking pictures of him in his back yard Tuesday night. The boy's mother originally was not alarmed because other people had taken pictures of the abandoned house next door, according to the report.
Larry Snell retirement
AUSTINTOWN -- After 40 years of directing Austintown Fitch High School's band, Larry Snell has retired. Dispute results in charges
YOUNGSTOWN -- An East Dewey Avenue resident faces charges of assault, carrying a concealed weapon, resisting arrest and disorderly conduct after a dispute early Thursday morning outside Forum Health Northside Medical Center.
Municipal Court Judge Robert A. Douglas set bond at $6,500 for Randall Davis, 26, who allegedly took a car belonging to the mother of a young girl he had visited at the hospital.
The mother told police that when Davis returned to the hospital he threw her to the ground and tried to choke her during an argument.
Lowellville celebration
LOWELLVILLE -- The village's annual Lowellville Day celebration will be July 24. A parade will start the day's events at 1 p.m. at the Lowellville High football stadium, and festivities including food and music will begin downtown at 2 p.m.
Traffic vote gets red light
WARREN -- City council's plan to vote on red light traffic cameras has been delayed.
Councilman Robert Dean, D-at large, originally wanted a third reading Wednesday on an ordinance to provide for use of automated cameras, which would impose civil penalties upon red light violators at certain intersections.
Questions about the automated system remain, however. Safety-Service Director William "Doug" Franklin wants to spend more time researching with potential vendors the issues of fines, duration of yellow traffic lights, and people's appeal rights.
Search: shooting suspect
YOUNGSTOWN -- Police are searching for a middle-age man suspected of shooting another man in the leg early Wednesday morning in an alley off Griffith Street.
Charles Thomas, 39, who has no permanent address but stays at The Rescue Mission, was treated at St. Elizabeth Health Center for a gunshot wound to his left knee. Thomas told police a man, whose name he gave police, had stepped out of his Cadillac and yelled before pointing a .38-caliber revolver at him.
The shooting may have resulted from a fist fight between the two men three weeks earlier, according to the report.
Butts Museum open house
FOWLER -- Fowler Township Historical Society plans an open house from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the David and Melissa Butts Museum, on the corners of state Routes 305 and 193 at Fowler Center. Admission is free, but donations are accepted.
Spraying for mosquitoes
HOWLAND -- Alexander Pest Control will spray for mosquitoes in Howland Township on Monday and Tuesday, 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. This will be the second spraying of the year. In case of rain the spraying will take place the following evening. Keep windows closed, pets indoors and don't leave any food outdoors during the spraying.
Autos and Angels car show
NILES -- Shepherd of the Valley's parking lot at 1500 McKinley Ave. will be filled with all types of cars Sunday for the first Autos and Angels Car Show. There will also be music, animals and food.
Angels for Animals is bringing dogs that may be adopted and will be selling chocolate chip cookies and pies. There will be a "Dukes of Hazzard" General Lee look-alike car.
