Career highlights
Significant events during George J. Tablack's tenure as Mahoning auditor:
November 1986: First elected as county auditor.
1988: Ordered by a common pleas judge to pay all bills generated by Mahoning County Board of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities.
1989: Requires all officeholders and department heads to begin submitting sick and vacation time balances for all their employees.
1990: Incurs the wrath of Robert Douglas, director of Human Services, by performing a performance audit of the department.
1991: Tablack comes close to being jailed for contempt in his renewed feud with the MRDD board. Later that year, Judge R. Scott Krichbaum, of common pleas court, finds Tablack in contempt and fines him $500 for failing to pay MRDD bills.
1992: Judge Krichbaum lifts contempt charge against Tablack.
1994: Tablack opponent drops out, and he runs unopposed for another term as auditor.
1997: Tablack steps in as interim Mahoning Valley Sanitary District director replacing Ed Flask, who had resigned.
1998: Tablack, a Democrat, endorses Bob Taft, a Republican, as governor. Also wins re-election for another term as auditor
1999: Tablack begins his run against incumbent James A. Traficant Jr. for U.S. Congress.
2000: Tablack runs a distant third in congressional race.
2002: Wins his fifth term as auditor.
2004: Youngstown/Mahoning County Visitor's Bureau sues Tablack over revenue from the county 3 percent bed tax.
