Pan Am Departure delayed

The airline had a rough weekend start in New York.
VIENNA -- Pan Am's service counter opened Monday at the Youngstown-Warren Regional Airport, but travelers will have to wait a few weeks longer than originally announced to take off.
Boston-Maine Airways, operating the Pan Am Clipper Connection, had planned to start service Sept. 15, but that's now being moved to mid-October. In the interim, the airline is arranging to add additional flights to Boston/Portsmouth.
Destinations already announced are Orlando/Sanford, Fla., St. Petersburg-Clearwater, Fla., Newburgh, N.Y., San Juan and Aquadilla, Puerto Rico.
The activity at the airport is welcomed by Trumbull and Mahoning counties, which for years have subsidized its operation. County commissioners from both were on hand for Monday's ribbon-cutting ceremony.
Pan Am had a rough weekend start in the New York area, where Newburgh is a destination.
The Times Herald-Record newspaper in New York's Hudson Valley reported long delays for Pan Am Clipper Connection's first few days. One flight was canceled.
Federal funding
According to the Times Herald-Record, a Pan Am spokesman said the airline has just three planes in service right now, so when weather and a minor mechanical problem caused delays, its entire system was temporarily thrown off. Pan Am is awaiting final Federal Aviation Administration certification to put two more planes in service.
Last year, another airline, Vacation Express, flew vacation travelers south but didn't have its own planes and squabbled with the port authority over money. People complained about late planes.
