XJamestown Volunteer Firemen's Auxiliary will have a Super Chinese Auction on Sunday at Jamestown (Pa.) Fairgrounds. Ticket sales start at noon; entertainment will be provided until the auction starts promptly at 3 p.m. Seating is limited, so take a lawn chair.
FASHION SHOWS
XA Fashion Extravaganza and luncheon sponsored by the East Liverpool-Calcutta Garden Club will be held at 10:30 a.m. July 30 at the East Liverpool Motor Lodge Ballroom on Dresden Avenue, East Liverpool. Tickets can be purchased for $15 by calling (330) 385-7506. Silent auction tickets will be sold at the door to win prizes totally over $2,000, and door prizes will be given away.
FESTIVALS
XParadise United Church of Christ, corner of New Buffalo and Calla roads, North Lima, will have a lawn festival from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday. Chicken and sausage sandwiches, hamburgers, hot dogs, sloppy joes, potato and macaroni salads, baked beans, homemade pies and cakes, and ice cream will be available for purchase. The event also will include a raffle and country store.
XPre-sale tickets for the Food Court at the upcoming St. Rose Festival to be held July 29, 30 and 31 on the church grounds, 48 E. Main St., Girard, can be purchased at the parish house at a 10 percent discount. Tickets are available in $1, $5, $10 and $20 amounts. The discount price is 90 cents, $4.50, $9.00 and $18. Money donations for the Festival Basket Raffle need to be brought to the parish house as soon as possible to allow time for the baskets to be put together.
FUND-RAISERS
XAssociated Neighborhood Center's second annual bowl-athon will be held at 10 a.m. July 23 at Bell Wick Bowl in Hubbard. Teams of four bowlers will compete for most pins, individual high game and most improved bowler. The fund-raiser includes lunch and prizes. XFriends of the Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County is raffling off The Collector's Works, a set of 25 hardcover classics of world literature. Tickets can be purchased for a $1 donation at the Friends Bookstore on the lower level of the Poland Branch Library until Saturday, when the winning ticket will be drawn. Summer bookstore hours are 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.
XThe Handle Bar, 1666 Mahoning Ave., Youngstown, will be holding Friends Helping Friends Run on Sunday. Sign-up starts at 10 a.m. with the first bike out at 1:30 p.m. and last bike in at 5:30 p.m. All proceeds from this event will go to Adrianna "Boo" Cannell, who is 7 years old and suffers from spinal rhabdoid, a rare from of cancer. Cost of the run is $10 per person, which includes door prizes, food, 50-50 raffle, Chinese auction and entertainment. XNiles Historical Society will have its annual luncheon July 30 on the grounds of the Ward-Thomas Museum, 503 Brown St., Niles. A cost of $20 will include the boxed lunch, a tour of the gardens and museum, and a program on "Life in the Western Reserve" by Sandra Zikursh of Mentor. XPETCO will sponsor a dog show at 1 p.m. July 30 at its Boardman store on U.S. Route 224 to raise money for the PETCO Foundation, which provides funds to find homes for unwanted pets. Registration runs through July 23 in these categories: toy and small (under 25 pounds), medium (25-59 pounds), large (60 pounds and over) and mix breed (all sizes). Proof of vaccinations must be provided. First-, second- and third-place ribbons, food and/or grooming prizes will be awarded to the judges' choice in each category. The winning dogs' owners will receive a photo of their pet with its ribbon, and the best in show will be chosen from the first-place winner in the first three categories. First-, second- and third-place winners in all categories also will receive food and/or grooming prizes. Handlers must be 13 or older. All competitors must be at the store 15 minutes before for final registration.
XThe 14th Annual Taste of the Valley will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Aug. 7 at Stambaugh Auditorium. Thirty-five restaurants will present food and beverages, in addition to a silent auction of sports memorabilia, gift baskets, a weekend get-away and a week's stay at a Florida condominium. Corporate tables are available for $350 for a table of four. Individual tickets are $75. All proceeds benefit Second Harvest Food Bank and the Stambaugh Pillars, and a portion of the ticket price is tax deductible. GARDEN TOURS
XThe fourth annual Gardens About Town benefit tour for the Crisis Shelter of Lawrence County, Pa., will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and noon to 4 p.m. Sunday. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased in advance at Print Center, Crisis Shelter, Weingartner Florist, Butz Flowers, Feola's Greenhouse, The Hoyt Institute, Backyard Creations and New Wilmington Collection. Tickets can be purchased on the days of the tour at the Altman garden, 300 N. Market St., New Wilmington, Pa., and the Daugherty garden, 16 E. Hazelcroft Ave., New Castle, Pa. XCalvary Towers, 1840 Market St., Youngstown, will have a huge, multi-family rummage sale from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. There will also be food available for purchase.
WINE TASTES
XSt. John Greek Orthodox Church of Boardman will host gala wine taste from 7 to 10 p.m. July 28 at Antone's Banquet Centre, 8578 Market St., Boardman. The event will include a variety of wines and a large assortment of hors d'ouvres and Greek pastries made by the women of the church and entertainment. Cost is $50 per person or $70 per couple. Tickets have been mailed to parishioners and also are available from the church office at (330) 758-5257 or through parish councilmen.
