NEWPORT, R.I. -- Second-seeded Vince Spadea advanced to the final, beating No. 7 seed Paul Goldstein, 7-6 (6), 6-2. Spadea will face defending champion Greg Rusedski of England. The third-seeded Rusedski defeated Wesley Moodie, 7-6 (2), 6-4, to advance to his third Newport final. He also won the title in 1993. The 30-year-old Spadea broke Goldstein's serve in the first and third games of the first set to jump to a 4-1 lead. Goldstein rallied to take it to a tiebreaker, but Spadea won the set with a soft forehand crossing shot. "Today I got the job done," said Spadea, who later withdrew from his doubles match with a strained abdominal muscle. "Winning ugly. Whatever you want to call it." He doesn't expect the injury to affect his play today. "That's part of my reason for pulling out, minimizing my tennis," he said. "I want to give my best, give my all in the singles final." The 31-year-old Rusedski wasn't broken in his match. Today's match will mark the first time two competitors in their 30s have met in an ATP final since Andre Agassi beat Davide Sanguinetti at San Jose in 2003. "Two young players out there," Rusedski joked. "I've played Vince a few times in the past. I'm really looking forward to it." Before the semifinals, Jim Courier, Yannick Noah, Jana Novotna and Butch Buchholz were inducted into the Hall of Fame during a 50-minute ceremony on center court. Earlier in the day, Moodie advanced to the semifinals by beating Michal Mertinak, 6-4, 6-3, while Rusedski knocked out Antony Dupuis, 7-6 (3), 6-4 in matches postponed by rain.

BASTAD, Sweden -- Top-seeded Rafael Nadal beat fellow-Spaniard Tommy Robredo 6-3, 6-3 to reach final. The 19-year-old French Open champion won his fourth consecutive straight-set match in the clay-court event, one of the oldest on the ATP Tour. He has won 28 straight matches on clay since April. Nadal will face the Czech Republic's Tomas Berdych, who beat countryman Jiri Vanek 7-5, 6-1. Nadal was seldom challenged in the first set and coasted to a 4-0 lead in the second after breaking Robredo's serve twice. The third-seeded Robredo then came alive, breaking Nadal's serve to love to make it 4-1. Nadal continued to struggle in his next two service games, facing triple break point twice. He managed to hold each time, clinching the match when Robredo hit another forehand just wide when trying for a down-the-line shot. "I lost my concentration when I led 4-0 in the second, but I stepped up my game. I'm very happy to have reached another final and the first here in Bastad," said Nadal, a quarterfinalist the last two years. He will try to win his seventh singles final of the year. Top-ranked Roger Federer leads the tour with eight titles. With the semifinal win, Nadal improved his tour-leading record on clay to 42-2 this season. Overall, he's 53-8 this season. Nadal also has an 18-match winning streak against his countrymen since losing to David Ferrer in the quarterfinals in Stuttgart last July.
Swiss Open
GSTAAD, Switzerland -- Stanislas Wawrinka beat Romanian qualifier Razvan Sabau 7-6 (7), 6-4 to reach his first ATP final. The 20-year-old Swiss will face former French Open champion Gaston Gaudio of Argentina, who earlier defeated seventh-seeded Nicolas Massu of Chile 6-3, 6-2.
