Bell's sacrifice fly in ninth gives Phillies a 1-0 triumph

The Astros and Giants won close contests while the Cubs romped.

PHILADELPHIA -- David Bell's sacrifice fly off Hector Carrasco in the ninth inning snapped a rare pitcher's duel at Citizens Bank Park and lifted the Philadelphia Phillies to a 1-0 win over the Washington Nationals on Saturday.
Bobby Abreu lined a single to right off Carrasco (3-2) to lead off the ninth. After Pat Burrell struck out for the third time, Chase Utley doubled to right and Ryan Howard was intentionally walked.
Bell hit a long fly to left and Matt Cepicky never attempted a throw.
Billy Wagner (2-1) earned the win with a scoreless ninth and the Phillies won their first 1-0 game in the second year of their home park.
Cory Lidle allowed five hits in eighth innings and struck out seven, while Nationals starter John Patterson was even better: He allowed just two hits in seven innings and had eight strikeouts in his 10th no-decision this season.

HOUSTON -- Roy Oswalt won his sixth straight start, Craig Biggio got two hits to tie Barry Bonds for 49th on the all-time hit list and the Astros moved back to .500 for the first time since April 22.
Oswalt (12-7) is 9-1 with a 2.07 ERA in 10 starts at home this season. He went 61/3 innings and allowed two runs on nine hits and a walk, striking out seven.
Brad Lidge worked the ninth for his 19th save.
Biggio's second hit of the game gave him 2,730 for his career and moved him into a tie with Barry Bonds, who has been injured all season. Biggio is in his 18th season, all with the Astros.
Houston, which was 15 games under .500 on May 24, has won 14 of its last 16 at home.
The Dodgers have lost three straight and six of eight.
Jeff Weaver (7-8) went six innings and allowed three runs on five hits and a walk.

SAN FRANCISCO -- Former Youngstown State ace Brad Hennessey pitched seven shutout innings in a spot start and Michael Tucker hit a fifth-inning single to break a scoreless tie for the Giants.
Hennessey (3-2), recalled late Friday to start in place of struggling lefty Kirk Rueter, made his sixth start of the season and 13th of his career. He allowed three hits, struck out two and walked one.
Tyler Walker pitched the ninth for his 12th save in 13 opportunities to complete the three-hitter.
Matt Morris (10-2) threw just 93 pitches in eight effective innings. He allowed six hits, struck out three and didn't walk a batter for the third straight start.

MIAMI -- Derrek Lee hit his 26th homer in his return to the lineup, Todd Walker homered and drove in three runs for Chicago.
Kerry Wood (2-2) scattered six hits -- including Jeff Conine's solo homer -- in 72/3 innings for his first win in 21/2 months. Chicago won its second straight following an eight-game losing streak.
Lee, second in the majors to Atlanta's Andruw Jones in homers, returned after missing three games because of irritation in his left shoulder. His solo shot off rookie Scott Olsen in the fourth gave him 68 RBIs.
Cubs rookie Adam Greenberg was hit in the head by the first pitch he faced in the major leagues in the ninth. Pinch hitting for Will Ohman, who relieved Wood in the eighth, Greenberg had no chance to get out of the way of Valerio de los Santos' first pitch, which struck him on the side of the helmet.
Greenberg was given a warm ovation from the crowd of 22,863 when he got up after remaining on the ground for several minutes and walked off the field.
Marlins manager Jack McKeon was ejected by third base umpire Jerry Layne for arguing Layne's ruling of a fair ball on Jerry Hairston's tying RBI double off Guillermo Mota (1-2) with two outs in the seventh.
Walker followed with his third homer of the season to put Chicago ahead 4-2. He added an RBI double in the ninth and Jose Macias hit a two-run double off Jim Mecir to make it 7-2. Michael Barrett's run-scoring single to increased the Cubs' lead to six.
No rain fell during the game, which was played with a 26 mph wind blowing from right field to left in the wake of Hurricane Dennis moving up the Gulf of Mexico.
Wood, who last won on April 24, a 5-2 win in Pittsburgh, struck out four in his third start since returning from a right shoulder strain.
After Lee's homer put the Cubs up 1-0, Conine tied it on his second homer of the season on a 3-2 pitch from Wood leading off the fifth. The Marlins took a 2-1 lead later in the inning on Juan Pierre's two-out RBI single.
Olsen held Chicago to four hits in six innings in his third major league start.
