Scrappers rip four homers in 9-6 win over Jamestown
Mahoning Valley also got six scoreless innings from pitcher Jensen Lewis.
JAMESTOWN, N.Y. -- The Mahoning Valley Scrappers hit four home runs Friday night, two of them three-run blasts and they needed every one of them.
Mahoning Valley built a 9-0 lead after six innings, then had to hold off the Jamestown Jammers in the final three frames to post a 9-6 victory and avoid a three-game sweep.
The Scrappers improved to 10-8 on the season, still a game behind the Jammers (11-7) in the Pinckney Division of the New York-Penn League standings.
Built 9-0 lead
Boodle Clark and Derrick Peterson each slammed three-run homers in the second and third innings, respectively, while Chris Clem and Stephen Head added solo shots as the Scrappers built a 9-0 lead.
The reason they were so far ahead was the fact that Mahoning Valley starting pitcher Jensen Lewis was almost untouchable for those six innings.
Lewis, who has not allowed an earned run in 14 innings this season, held the Jammers to just two singles, one of those a bunt, while striking out six with no walks and retiring the Jammers in order in five of the six innings.
However the Scrappers relievers weren't quite as efficient.
Relief pitching struggles
Thomas Cowley allowed five of the six Jammer runs, while Josh Kite, who followed, gave up the sixth run. Only Dustin Roddy, who pitched the ninth to gain the save, was effective, striking out two of the four batters he faced in the inning.
Clark hit a rocket over the left field wall in the second with Head and Peterson aboard, while Peterson's shot in the third was almost in the same spot to score Matt Fornasiere and Head.
Clem led off the fifth with a solo blast and Head, who was 3-for-4, connected for his fourth homer and second in as many days in the seventh.
Jamestown scored three times in the seventh off Cowley, with the key plays an RBI double by Gaby Sanchez and a Scrappers' error.
In the eighth they added three more including two doubles by James Guerrero and Sanchez.
Mahoning Valley will return home today to take on the Stedler Division leaders, Oneonta Tigers, in the first of a three game series at 7:05 p.m. at Eastwood Field.
