MiniPage activities meet many state and national educational standards. This week's standards: Students understand ways in which language, stories, folktales, music and artistic creations serve as expressions of culture and influence the behavior of people living in a particular culture. (Social Studies: Culture) Students understand factors that contribute to one's personal identity such as interests, capabilities and perceptions. (Social Studies: Individual Development and Identity) Students use different media, techniques and processes to communicate ideas, experiences and stories. (Visual Arts)
Activities:
1. Design a cover for a scrapbook of your own. Draw pictures or cut out pictures from newspapers or magazines for your cover.
2. Select a topic you like a lot, such as animals, fashion, food or sports. Now cut out items that match your theme from the newspaper. Include ads, photographs, news stories and comic strips. Put your items in a special scrapbook.
3. Ask a family member or a friend to share a photo scrapbook with you. Ask them to tell you why they selected specific photos for their scrapbook.
4. Why do you think people would want to collect these items: (a) religious souvenirs, (b) advertising cards, (c) speeches, and (d) photographs?
5. Plan and put together a scrapbook of a trip you might take this summer. Your trip might be to another town or state, or it might be to someplace special in your own town. Make a list of the different items you might want to collect for your scrapbook. Be sure to include tickets, photos, pamphlets and brochures, maps and postcards. Look for a blank scrapbook on your trip that reflects the places you go. When you come home, put your items together in a creative way. Then share your scrapbook with your friends.
