Scrappers fail to hold late lead on Jammers
Jamestown rallied for a second straight win over Mahoning Valley.
JAMESTOWN, N.Y. -- Greg Burns and Gary Roche had two-run singles in the bottom of the seventh inning, lifting the Jamestown Jammers to a come-from-behind, 6-5 victory over the Mahoning Valley Scrappers Thursday in a New York-Penn League game.
The Jammers (11-6) trailed 4-1 entering the seventh, but with one out Matt Ellington started the rally when he was hit by a pitch by the Scrappers' Shea Douglas.
Douglas then walked Marcos Cabral and Tanner Rogers singled, loading the bases.
Burns followed with his two-run single to right, and the Scrappers replaced Douglas with Matthew Loberg.
Roche greeted the reliever with a two-run single to right, making it 5-4, and Roche later scored on a single by Gaby Sanchez.
Early advantage
Mahoning Valley (9-8) took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Matthew Fornasiere doubled with one out, advanced to third on an error and scored on a wild pitch.
The Scrappers made it 3-0 in the top of the fourth, when Jordan Brown led off with a double and Stephen Head followed with his third home run of the season.
Jamestown scored in the bottom of the inning. Jamar Walton singled, advanced to second on a wild pitch, stole third and scored on a throwing error by Omar Casillas, Mahoning Valley's catcher.
The Scrappers got that run back in the fifth inning as Chris Clem's double scored Boodle Clark, who led off the inning with a walk.
Mahoning Valley scored once in the eighth. Head walked with one out and later scored on Derrick Peterson's single.
The Scrappers had a chance to tie the game in the ninth. Clark led off with a single but was forced out by Trevor Mortensen. A fielding error put runners at the corners, but Brown flied out to end the game.
The teams play the finale of their three-game series tonight at 7:05.
