SCHOOLS Lakeview hires principal for Cortland Elementary

A levy failed by two votes on May 3.

CORTLAND -- The Lakeview Board of Education hired a new elementary school principal at its Thursday meeting and discussed the upcoming Aug. 2 vote on a 3.5-mill levy.
The board hired Scott C. Taylor as new principal at Cortland Elementary School for a three-year contract beginning Aug. 15. Taylor has been an elementary principal in Burton, Ohio, since 2001, and was also that school district's transportation supervisor.
In other business, the levy committee gave the board an update regarding their plans for the Aug. 2 levy vote. A levy failed by two votes on May 3.
Committee leaders Kathy Moody and Mary Williams told the board that the committee has mailed a letter and an absentee ballot to every parent of each student in the Lakeview district.
They said the committee has also mailed a voter registration form and an absentee ballot to every graduating senior from 2005 and any rising senior who will be 18 at the time of the vote.
District superintendent Robert Wilson said he will be going door-to- door to speak to residents in the precincts where the May levy vote failed. He said he wants to know why the residents didn't vote for the levy and to work on resolving their areas of concern.
Wilson will also speak about the levy at all churches involved in the LOAF ( Lakeview Outreach and Fellowship).
New additions
The board also approved other personnel hires at the meeting. The new teachers and staff members include:
UAmy L. Boom, mild/moderate intervention specialist, Cortland Elementary School.
UAbbie Kushma and Jill Roberts, kindergarten teachers, Bazetta Elementary School.
URobert Pavalko, elementary school music teacher.
UJeanette Callahan, majorette coordinator.
USharon Bayus and Kristina Denman, summer reading achievement remediation and test administration, Cortland Elementary (total 12 hours).
UMonica Hawley and Amanda Krygowski, middle school reading and math intervention.
The board also hired five teachers for reading and math intervention in Cortland schools for a total of 48 hours: Kristina Denman, Kristi Falter, Donna Lewis, Mary Madeline and Nancy Williams.
