BOARDMAN -- Thomas P. O'Neill III, the son of the late Speaker of the House Tip O'Neill, will speak at 9:30 a.m. today at the 75th Biennial State of Ohio Ancient Order of Hibernians Convention. The convention is being held at the Holiday Inn on South Avenue through Sunday. O'Neill, the former lieutenant governor of Massachusetts, is currently the chief executive officer of O'Neill and Associates in Boston, a public relations and government relations firm. The AOH is a Catholic, Irish American fraternal organization founded in 1836.
757th Squadron awards
VIENNA -- A military awards ceremony at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Youngstown Air Reserve Station on King Graves Road will honor more than 90 Air Force Reserve members from the 757th Airlift Squadron. Col. Tim Thomson will present 97 medals to 59 aircrew members who were called to active duty in six major military operations from Feb. 27, 2003, to Aug. 31, 2004, including operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom. The squadron is one of two assigned to the 910th Airlift Wing, which primarily delivers personnel and cargo by airdrop and air-land techniques.
Hot food giveaway
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Youngstown Community Food Center will hold a hot food and meat giveaway from 9 to 11 a.m. Tuesday at the center and Gleaners Food Bank. Qualifying families require photo identification and proof of income to participate. The center will also hold a prize drawing every 15 minutes, sponsored by the U.S. Postal Service and the National Association of Letter Carriers.
Scholarship applications
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Youngstown Italian Heritage Foundation is accepting applications for the $1,000 Centofanti scholarship and the $1,000 Tony Lariccia Family scholarship, which will be awarded to a Youngstown State University student. Applicants must submit a biography describing their high school experience as well as an essay explaining why they believe they are deserving of the scholarship. The deadline for applications to be submitted is July 20. The scholarships will be presented July 29 at opening ceremonies at the Greater Youngstown Italian Fest at the Canfield Fairgrounds. Reward for arsons info
WARREN -- The Trumbull County Fire Investigation Unit is offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those involved in four vacant building arsons on Bane Street Southwest. The fires occurred June 18, Monday and Tuesday. Call (330) 883-1085 or (330) 219-5090.
Rabies shots available
YOUNGSTOWN -- A rabies shot clinic will be from 12:30 to 4 p.m. Saturday at The Oak Hill Renaissance Place, the former South Side Hospital. The clinic will be in the parking deck. Shots are $3 for dogs, cats and ferrets.
Man pleads guilty
YOUNGSTOWN -- Kitwan Dalton, 27, of East Judson Avenue pleaded guilty Thursday in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court to charges of possession of cocaine and illegal possession of a weapon. Judge R. Scott Krichbaum delayed sentencing pending completion of a pre-sentence report by the Ohio Adult Parole Authority. Dalton is to return to court for sentencing Sept. 9.
Boy, 15, shot in the arm
YOUNGSTOWN -- A 15-year-old East Florida Avenue boy was treated at St. Elizabeth Health Center for a gunshot wound to his right arm late Wednesday. The boy told police he heard his twin brother screaming near their home and was hit by gunfire from a red Dodge when he ran toward his brother. The brother said he was threatened with a gun while walking on Market Street around 11 p.m., ran and shots were fired at him from the red Dodge on East Florida. He was not injured. The motive may have been a fight earlier in the day that involved the wounded brother, reports show. Police have several suspects.
