NEW WILMINGTON Council selects long-time attorney as borough solicitor

The new solicitor will be paid $150 per hour.
NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- Atty. Frank Verterano was named borough solicitor by New Wilmington Borough Council on Tuesday.
Verterano has practiced law in New Castle since 1970 and has served as Lawrence County solicitor and assistant county solicitor as well as being Mahoning Township's solicitor for more than 20 years.
He will be paid $150 per hour.
Verterano succeeds longtime borough solicitor Thomas Mansell, who was terminated by a split vote of council Nov. 1 after serving for more than 30 years. Atty. Timothy McNickle of Grove City has been serving as interim solicitor.
Also Tuesday, Police Chief Carmen Piccirillo said that summer safety camp will likely be postponed until next summer because of lack of response.
Piccirillo also reported that an initial effort of a DUI enforcement team for five hours this weekend netted several arrests for drunken driving as well as underage driving, driving under suspension and apprehension of one person wanted on a warrant. Target areas were New Wilmington and Neshannock and Pulaski townships. Enforcement efforts will rotate among several municipalities which are cooperating. The program is funded by a grant which pays officers' overtime costs.
Also Tuesday:
UCouncil agreed to block off South Market Street Aug. 7 for a car show which is part of the Arts & amp; Heritage Festival sponsored by the New Wilmington Chamber of Commerce.
UCouncil member Kenneth Romig announced the borough has been awarded a $1,880 Federal Emergency Management Agency grant to help pay for last year's flood damage.
UMayor Wendell Wagner complained that Carol Drive and Laury Lane are being damaged by horse-drawn Amish buggies. Wagner said horseshoes are made of harder metal than they used to be and that continual traffic by the buggies is wearing dangerous dips in the roads. He said the buggies are using the township roads as a shortcut and asked whether the buggies could be restricted to state highways.
