July 4, 1980: One of the Youngstown district's older steel processing firms, the Fitzsimons Steel Co., will close its 69-year-old Wilson Avenue plant, idling some 85 workers. Johnson Bronze Co. in New Castle announces that it has ceased operations indefinitely, with 200 employees being laid off.
Joseph Peroni, 4, of Bellview Ave., is recovering at home after nearly drowning in Pemberton Pool. Lifeguard Lynn Green rescued the boy after spotting him at the bottom of the pool.

July 4, 1955: Storms sweep through Ohio, causing heavy damage in the Mahoning Valley and killing a mother and her four children near Columbus. Lightning struck a tree under which the family had sought shelter. The father survived with burns.
Thousands of bathers are attracted to public and private swimming pools in and around Youngstown by sweltering heat, which was broken by a mid-afternoon storm. Youngstown's North Side pool registered attendance of 1,400 for the day.
