BOARDMAN -- An Akron man said he was stabbed as he walked through the lot of a U.S. Route 224 convenience store. The 29-year-old man told police he was walking through the lot Tuesday night when a man asked him for money. The Akron man said that he didn't have any and kept walking, and then he felt what he thought was a punch in the abdomen. He got into his car and drove to Longhorn Steakhouse, where he discovered that he was bleeding, realized he'd been stabbed and called police. The man described his assailant as a white man with long hair, pulled into a ponytail.
Aggravated menacing
AUSTINTOWN -- A Youngstown man was arrested Wednesday afternoon after being accused of brandishing a gun at another motorist while both were traveling on state Route 46. James H. Bernard, 56, of McCartney Road, was charged with aggravated menacing, carrying a concealed weapon and improper transport of a firearm, all misdemeanors. A 26-year-old Boardman man called police shortly before 1 p.m. saying that a man in a red Chevrolet Monte Carlo had tried to cut him off in traffic and then threatened him with a handgun. Police located the car, driven by Bernard, as it ran through a red light near the Austintown Plaza.
Car strikes parked cars
BOARDMAN -- A 2004 Corvette traveling too fast as it rounded the curve on state Route 625 at Arden Boulevard early Thursday went off the left side of the road and struck two parked cars in a driveway, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol Canfield post. The car, driven by Thomas Pavel, 30, of Canfield, flipped after it hit the first parked car and rolled on top of the second car's roof, the patrol said. The Corvette then hit the house at 4439 Lockwood Blvd. Pavel and his passenger, Nichole Hilton, 28, of Youngstown, were not wearing their seat belts and were both ejected. Both were taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center. Pavel was cited for failure to control, the patrol said.
Hunting predators
AUSTINTOWN -- The township police department has joined the Ohio Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force. The task force is made up of Ohio prosecuting attorneys, sheriffs and police chiefs, along with state and federal authorities, whose goal is apprehension and successful prosecution of online predators. Bill Mason, Cuyahoga County prosecutor, said, "Austintown's interim Police Chief Bryan R. Kloss' participation in this statewide task force will hold Internet pedophiles accountable and ensure they are apprehended and punished."
Hired for county jail
MERCER, Pa. -- Three people were hired by the Mercer County Prison Board this week for positions at the Mercer County Jail, effective July 18. District Attorney James Epstein, prison board president, said two full-time corrections lieutenants were hired: Richard Adamo and Paul Fitzgerald, both of New Castle. Adamo is a supervisor in the Lawrence County Jail, where he also does training, and Fitzgerald is a sergeant in a state correctional facility. The lieutenants will be in charge of shifts and help in training. Both will be paid $38,014 annually. Thomas Lewis of Grove City was hired as a part-time facility management assistant. He is a military retiree and did similar work with the U.S. Coast Guard.
Concealed weapon
WARREN -- Police arrested an 18-year-old man on charges of aggravated menacing, improper handling and carrying a concealed weapon Monday. The man's white 1989 Caprice was stopped after a woman advised police the man was involved in several South Side shootings in the past few days. Police found a .380 handgun in the glovebox and a .44 revolver in the trunk. The revolver's serial number had been filed off, and the vehicle had expired plates. Three juveniles were released to their parents. The 18-year-old is being held in the county jail.
Registrar location
WARREN -- The Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles will temporarily close and relocate the Deputy Registrar office at 4447 Mahoning Ave., effective at 5 p.m. today. Customers are asked to use one of the following locations until renovations to a new location are completed in about two weeks: 2027 Elm Road, Warren; or 5555 Youngstown-Warren Road, Niles. When the office reopens, it will be located at 2750 Mahoning Ave. NW in the Jamestown Plaza.
