Fumes overwhelm troopers rescuing pair

MANSFIELD (AP) -- Two state troopers were overcome by gas fumes Thursday while rescuing victims from an overturned vehicle on Interstate 71.
Troopers James Thompson and Brian Kelley became disoriented and nearly passed out, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
The two officers were first on the scene of a crash that occurred about 4:30 p.m. when a northbound minivan driven by Dale M. Boyd, 66, of Greenville, Pa., went off the right side of the interstate and struck a tree stump, flipping the vehicle over.
Boyd and a passenger, Helena R. Boyd, 60, were trapped inside the minivan, both hanging upside down by their safety belts.
The two troopers entered the overturned vehicle, which was leaking gas from a ruptured fuel tank. The officers cut the victims free and got them out, but that's when the troopers became disoriented.
Both men were transported to a Mansfield hospital where they were treated and released.
Dale and Helena Boyd were also taken to a hospital. Their condition was not available Thursday night.
The crash remains under investigation.
