PennDOT plans work on Mercer Road

NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation will rebuild state Road 1005 between Maitland Lane and Mitchell Road this spring, straightening out some of the curves in the pavement.
Work on the road, also known as Mercer Road, will start in June and continue through March 2006, said PennDOT District 11 spokesman Steve Marsinko.
The department has not yet awarded contracts for the $3 million project, which will include some pavement realignment to improve intersection sight lines, new shoulders, drainage work, guardrails and signals.
The department will announce detour details later, Marsinko said.
The contractor will peel off the existing pavement, create a subbase of about 8 inches of gravel, lay down roughly 2 inches of course asphalt and cover the road with an inch or so of top coat to create two 12-foot-wide lanes, according to PennDOT Assistant District Executive John Ekiert.
The low bidder for the project was John Gulisek Construction of Mount Pleasant, Pa.
