Trial over inmate abuse to begin as scheduled
YOUNGSTOWN -- Trial for Michael Budd, the former Mahoning County Sheriff's Department supervisor accused of inmate abuse, will proceed Feb. 14 as planned in Cleveland federal court.
In an order issued Monday, U.S. District Judge Lesley Brooks Wells denied a motion by Budd's Youngstown attorney, Martin E. Yavorcik, to schedule the trial at a later date.
Yavorcik, in asking for a postponement, said he will be in trial in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court beginning Feb. 7 for Richard E. Goldberg of Liberty. Goldberg is a disbarred medical malpractice attorney accused of defrauding clients.
Budd, demoted from major to deputy when indicted in October 2004, has been on paid leave since then.
Library opening late
CANFIELD -- The Canfield Library will reopen Wednesday, two days later than expected, after improvements are completed to the interior.
The library has a fresh coat of paint, new carpeting and a newly resurfaced circulation desk.
Stores report vandalism
WARREN -- Two city businesses reported vandalism to police over the weekend.
Christies Market, 408 Atlantic St. S.E., reported someone threw a spark plug through a glass door window Friday.
Auto Zone, 2480 Elm Road N.E., reported someone threw a brick through a glass door and removed property Saturday.
Dean to seek re-election
WARREN -- Councilman Bob Dean, D-at large, announced Monday he'll seek another term in the May 3 primary.
Dean, known as "Doby," has been a council member for 10 months after his appointment to a vacancy, and he has concentrated on community safety issues, budget matters and long-term city revitalization.
Williamson College plans open houses
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Williamson College of Business Administration will be hosting open houses for prospective students on Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to noon and on Feb. 6 from 1 to 4:30 p.m.
Presentations in accounting, advertising/public relations, business economics, finance, general administration, human resource management, international business, management information systems and marketing will be provided. Internship opportunities and leadership activities will be discussed.
Visiting students will meet faculty, current business students and alumni. Tours will be available. Academic advisers also will be on hand to answer questions.

Relay for Life rally setat Liberty High School
LIBERTY -- The Liberty Relay for Life will host a kickoff rally at 6 p.m. Wednesday in the cafeteria at Liberty High School. The event is open to the community.
The American Cancer Society's Relay for Life will take place at the high school May 20-21.
The Liberty relay raised $123,000 last year, its fourth year to benefit the Cancer Society.
