YOUNGSTOWN -- Lorenzo Hasley grabbed roughly $50 in tips from a waitress at Isaly's when the owner let him stay inside the restaurant to keep warm and wait for a ride, police said.
Hasley, 15, of East Judson Avenue, was tracked to a relative's house on Hilton Avenue on Sunday afternoon by Patrolman Chad Zubal and arrested on a strong-arm robbery charge. The teenager, who is on probation and hasn't been to school since Thanksgiving, was taken to the Martin P. Joyce Juvenile Justice Center, reports show.
Zubal, when he arrived at the South Avenue restaurant, learned that the owner had given his cell phone to Hasley earlier Sunday afternoon so the boy could call for a ride. The restaurant was closed at the time, and two waitresses were sitting at a booth counting their tips.
Hasley reached over a waitress who had her back to him and snatched about $50 from the table, Zubal was told. When the waitress grabbed Hasley's hand, he pushed her down and they struggled, reports show.
Witnesses said the boy broke free and ran out the front door and across South Avenue. They gave police a description of the boy, mentioning a distinctive birth mark under his left eye.
Tracking the suspect
Zubal then set out to follow the suspect's footprints in the snow. The officer said the tracks were distinctive because the shoes had Reebok stamped on the soles.
As the officer approached 349 Hilton Ave., he saw tracks leading to the rear door of the house. The resident of the house allowed police to enter.
Hasley was found hiding under clothing and a milk crate in the basement. Zubal noted in his report that the boy has a distinctive birth mark under his left eye.
After being handcuffed, Hasley told police that he took $25, said he would give it back, didn't use force to get it and that he was sorry. The money taken in the robbery was not in the house because Hasley's cousin's girlfriend had taken it and left, reports show.
The boy showed police where he'd hidden his Reebok shoes in his sister's bedroom.
Zubal said in his report that he believes Hasley's grandmother, who lives on East Judson, is the boy's legal guardian, whom he hasn't seen in months. The boy has been staying at the Hilton Avenue address, the officer said.
