MAHONING COUNTY Officer awaits probe results

A state agency is conducting a criminal investigation of the officer.
STRUTHERS -- A city police officer accused of instigating the beating of two men at his home on New Year's Day should find out next week whether he will be disciplined by his department.
Officer Xavier Young attended a closed-door hearing Thursday along with a union representative.
Evidence was presented about possible violations of policies and procedures. Mayor Daniel Mamula said Young chose not to respond.
Campbell Mayor Jack Dill was selected as the hearing officer.
"The hearing officer does not prescribe the type of discipline he may think is appropriate," Mamula said. "It is simply a yes or no answer if he believes there was enough credibility with the charges."
The hearing officer's decision is passed on to Struthers Safety Director John Sveda.
Separate probe
The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation is conducting a separate investigation into the case.
Mamula said Thursday that the BCI probe was not yet finished.
"Now this is just off the top of my head, but I am guessing we will probably have both decisions by sometime next week," he said.
Young, a police officer since 1999, is on administrative leave from the department without pay. He is accused of instigating a beating by a dozen partygoers of two brothers who showed up at the party to retrieve the teen daughter of a girlfriend. One of the brothers, a Michigan resident, was hospitalized with serious head injuries. He has since been released.
