ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Caity Matter and Ohio State put on a blistering display of shooting to beat woeful Michigan. Matter scored 15 of her game-high 28 points in less than five minutes. "I thought the key was that we made the extra pass and got some good floor spacing," Ohio State coach Jim Foster said. "When you do that, it can be a very simple game." Tabitha Pool had 23 points for Michigan (4-12, 0-5), which has lost eight consecutive games. Teammate Ta'Shia Walker added 11. The Buckeyes, now 3-1 in conference play, are 15-2 to open a season for the first time in 20 years. The 1984-85 team went 28-2 before losing in the Eastern Regional final. The Wolverines had no answer for Ohio State's balanced attack.
No. 4 Rutgers 68, Pittsburgh 41
PISCATAWAY, N.J. -- Freshman Matee Ajavon had 24 points, and a stifling Rutgers press held Pittsburgh to 16 second-half points in the Scarlet Knights' victory. Rutgers, which jumped from No. 24 to No. 4 in just two weeks by beating powerhouses Texas, Tennessee and LSU, broke away from a 34-25 halftime lead with its pressing defense. The Scarlet Knights forced seven straight turnovers in a three-minute span while outscoring the Panthers 11-0 and finished with a season-high 27 takeaways. Essence Carson, another freshman, added 12 points for the Scarlet Knights (11-2, 2-0 Big East). Katie Histed had 13 points for Pittsburgh (9-5, 1-2).
No. 23 Kansas St. 87, Missouri 44
MANHATTAN, Kan. -- Kansas State opened with an 11-0 run, and got 25 points from Kendra Wecker. Wecker scored 19 of her points in the second half for the Wildcats (11-3, 2-1 Big 12), who also got a season-high 21 from Laurie Koehn. Wecker added 12 rebounds and five assists. LaToya Bond lead Missouri (7-7, 1-2) with 14 points.
