AUSTIN, Texas -- No. 1-ranked Texas scored all of its runs in the first five innings and a tough defense turned away several YSU scoring threats in an 8-0 victory in game one of a doubleheader Sunday at Disch-Falk Field.
With the win, the Longhorns gave coach Augie Garrido his 1,500th career victory.
Texas (15-0) won the nightcap 8-2.
In the opener, Texas led 5-0 after three innings and scored three more runs in the fifth.
Brandon Caipen and Dustin Thomas had two hits apiece for the Penguins while Seth Johnston and Taylor Teagarden both had three hits for the Longhorns.
Kevin Libeg was tagged with the loss, allowing seven runs (six earned) in 4 1/3 innings, while Kyle MucCulloch picked up his third win of the season by throwing seven scoreless innings.
In the second game, the Longhorns scored four runs in the seventh inning.
YSU (1-4) scored a run in the top of the first inning on a Jim Phillips RBI single that scored Tommy Nutt. In the sixth, Dustin Thomas singled home Brandon Caipen to tie the score at 2-2.
Texas added a run in the bottom of the sixth, four in the seventh and one in the eighth.
The Penguins begin a three-game series at Wofford Saturday.

RICHMOND, Ky. -- Youngstown State opened the 2005 season with a 2-2 record at the Eastern Kentucky Invitational.
The Penguins defeated IUPUI 2-0, and 2-1, and lost to Dayton in eight innings, 2-1, and Eastern Kentucky, 8-0.
Junior Kelly Murphy picked up both wins for the Penguins, including a one-hit shutout against IUPUI on Saturday.
Junior Lacy Bronson led the Penguins offensively against the Jaguars with a two-out, two-run single in the bottom of the fourth inning for the game's only runs. Freshman Becky Hibner singled to lead off the inning and classmate Bethany Hafley reached on a fielder's choice and advanced Hibner to second. After a passed ball, junior Lacy Hess walked to load the bases setting up Bronson game-winning hit.
In YSU's second victory over the Jaguars, junior Tiffany Patteson, who went 2-for-2, led off the bottom of the first inning with a double. After Hibner reached on a fielder's choice, Hafley's sacrifice bunt moved Patteson to third and Hibner to second. Patteson then scored on Sarah Berry's ground out.
In the bottom of the second inning, Bronson singled and moved to second on Kiisha Warfield's ground out. Bronson advanced to third when Char Kudlock reached on an error and then stole home to secure YSU's second run.
Murphy pitched five innings of scoreless relief and allowed just three hits.
YSU competes in the Kentucky tournament starting Saturday.
Women's tennis
MUNCIE, Ind. -- Youngstown State lost 6-1 to Ball State Sunday at the Ball State Invitational. Gina Peretti won (6-1, 6-3) for the second straight day at No. 4 singles to earn the lone point for the Penguins.
At No. 1 singles, Karen Najbert lost to Jenny Batty 6-1, 6-1. At No. 2 singles, Whitney Thomas lost to Jessica Thompson 6-0, 6-2. At No. 3 singles, Heather Hagood lost to Haly Calderwood. At No. 5 singles, Nicole Muzechuk beat Stephanie Farrer 6-4, 6-3 while at No. 6 singles, Emily Thayer lost to Katie Owens 6-2, 6-0.
In doubles, Najbert and Michelle Fuleky lost 8-0 at No. 1, Hagood and Peretti won 8-5 at No. 2 and Muzechuk and Thayer lost 8-2 at No. 3.
The Penguins play host to Robert Morris Wednesday.

Rayen tickets
YOUNGSTOWN -- Tickets for The Rayen School's girls regional basketball game will be on sale today and Tuesday.
Pre-game tickets, for $5, will be on sale from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days at the Rayen athletic office. Tickets are $6 at the door.
Rayen plays Medina Highland Tuesday at 8 p.m. at Barberton High School.
Boone in draw
QUEBEC, Canada -- Fighting in his first six-rounder Youngstown middleweight Darnell Boone fought to a draw against Walid Smichet Saturday night.
Two two judges voted the fight a draw and a third judge voted for Smichet.
Boone (4-0-1) came out fast, staggering Smitchet (8-1-2) with a solid right uppercut in the first round.
Jack Loew, Boone's trainer said, "Darnell completely out-boxed [Smichet] actually tagged him with the harder shots in the fight, but for being in the other guy's backyard it was a wonder that we even were able to get a draw."
Added Boone, "This was a valuable experience against a local guy with a good record at his house, but I thought I did more than enough to win. I should have had better patience when I had him hurt in the first round."
The main event, for the vacant NABF light welterweight championship, went to Herman Ngoudjo, who won by TKO over Eloy Rojas, when the fight was stopped after the eighth round of a scheduled 12-rounder.

In a photograph in Sunday's editions, Boardman basketball player Brittany Sirak was shown guarding Hoover's Annie Montgomery. The caption incorrectly identified Sirak as her sister, Lauren.
