YAABSE LUNCHEON Awards and accomplishments

Seven retired teachers were recently saluted and honored for many notable achievements in their careers as well as for work with pupils in the Youngstown City School District. Those receiving 2005 Teaching Jewel Awards were:
Dr. Herbert Louis Armstrong: A South High School graduate, he spent most of his career as an administrator and was instrumental in desegregating the central office at the Youngstown Board of Education. He was behind the appointment of the first two black elementary school supervisors and first black secretaries in the board's business office.
Freddie B. Boyd: She taught special-education pupils for 32 years at Lincoln Elementary School, Thorn Hill school and various special preschools. Boyd emphasized that, with the proper training, special-needs kids had the same potential to learn and achieve success as those without disabilities.
Lillian Frost: She retired in 1996, but has continued to work in the school system. She began her career at Madison Elementary School and received her master's in counseling from Youngstown State University. She also served as coordinator of career education and as a counselor.
Everett McCollum: His career spanned 32 years, including serving as principal at Hillman Junior High School. He taught at West Elementary School, Volney Rogers Middle School and South and Woodrow Wilson high schools. McCollum also produced five Broadway musicals.
Mary H. McCollum: She initially enrolled at Youngstown University to study voice. After deciding she was no longer interested in music, she went into education and spent her entire career as a kindergarten teacher. Among the schools she taught at were Thorn Hill and John White schools.
Doris Perry: She spent more than 35 years teaching elementary pupils and said one of her greatest accomplishments came from working with children and adults whom others had given up on. She still works as a substitute teacher.
Elsie Rhodes: A graduate of The Rayen School, her teaching history includes the Watkins and Open Door Christian Academies, Kirkmere Elementary School and YSU. She currently works with YSU students and is taking an education course at Walsh College in Canton.
