STATE WRESTLING Five area standouts to vie for state titles

COLUMBUS -- Five area athletes will compete today in championship wrestling matches at Ohio State's Schottenstein Center.
Freshman Tony Jameson and senior Anthony Gigliotti of Fitch High will compete for Division I state titles at 103 and 145 pounds, respectively.
Before the season, Falcons coach Brett Powell thought Jameson (37-3) would wrestle for a state title at 103 pounds. He was right.
Jameson did it impressively, pinning Alex Weaver of Cincinnati Moeller in 3 minutes, 55 seconds to earn that berth.
Gigliotti (36-4), a senior, won a hard fought 6-5 decision over Mike Haxton of Strongsville.
Sharp set in Div. II
West Branch heavyweight Nathan Sharp, a sophomore, won a thrilling 2-1 overtime decision over Mike Carpenter of Thornville Sheridan and will compete for a Div. II title.
Howland's Kyle Grantz (37-3), also a sophomore, will compete for a 215-pound crown. He won a 3-2 decision over Dustin Smith of Sandusky Perkins.
Jackson-Milton's Nick Dierkes (41-1), who finished second at state last year, will wrestle for the Div. III 145 title today. He defeated Dustin Nedolast of Fostoria St. Wendelin 9-3 in the semifinals.
Three wrestlers in Div. II lost in the championship semifinals and will return today in consolation semifinals.
Consolation wrestlers
Andy Lamancusa (140) of West Branch lost to Colt Sponseller of West Holmes, 9-6, snapping his 38-match unbeaten streak. Also, East Liverpool's Anthony Duffield (112) was pinned by Aaron Hart of St. Paris Graham in 2:57, and Matt Walker (215) of Alliance lost to Jason Marshall of St. Paris Graham, 10-2.
Staying alive in the consolation rounds were Nick Bodnar of Fitch at 135, Eric Morrow of West Branch at 119, Max Pearce of Poland at 125 and Rob Holbert of Howland at 275.
Eric Morrow (32-8) decisioned Clem Artmann of Hillsboro 6-2 and moved on to a consolation semifinal match.
Steve Wall (35-7) of Howland was eliminated by Danny Michaels 17-8 in a 112-pound consolation quarterfinal. Earlier, Wall lost to Duffield 14-12 in the championship quarterfinals.
Holbert (39-2) ousted Brandon Rydarowicz (28-12) of Hubbard in 2:33 to earn a consolation semifinal berth.
Pearce continued his comeback as he decisioned Jeb Pencil of Northwestern 10-2 to earn a 125-pound consolation semifinal berth.
Joe Knopick of Southeast was eliminated by Tyler Blakely of Benjamin Logan 8-6 at 189.
Spartans bow out
Three wrestlers from Boardman bowed out of the tournament in round two of the consolations. Senior Adam Chizmar (26-12) lost an overtime match, 5-3, to Jake Farrell of Galloway Westland at 119.
The Spartans' Jon Green (29-7) senior, was beaten by Eric Meyer of Cincinnati Oak Hills 7-4 at 130 and sophomore Justin Powell (26-10) was pinned by Mark Sexton of New Philadelphia in 4:24 at 215.
In Div. II, Derik Caudill (35-10) 0f Beaver Local, after winning a first round match, lost twice at 118 pounds and finished the season 35-10. Teammate Shawn Dunn (35-8), a senior, was eliminated by Alan Sells of Milton-Union 4-3 at 140.
In Div. III consolation quarterfinals, Brad Harnett of Brookfield (30-14) lost 18-3 to A.J. Hall of Massillon Tuslaw.
The season came to an end for Jackson-Milton's John Rozum (37-10) who lost to Tyler Hardie of Bloom-Carroll 8-6 at 160, and the Bluejays' Adam Keck (36-5) who lost 8-4 to Jacob Hale of Stryker at 171.
Brookfield's senior Dave Dillon (38-4), 140 and sophomores Tristan Thompson (39-7), 112, and Ross Tice (32-7), 145, ended their season, losing in second round consolation matches.
