Summary of major events at Mill Creek MetroParks in March.
March 1: 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., Introduction to Floral Design-Part 2, for those who have taken introductory classes in the art of flower arranging. Deb Clark will demonstrate high-style arrangements, vasing roses and an unusual topiary design in this six-session advance workshop. Each week participants create an unique arrangement to take home. Call Fellows Riverside Gardens to register. Fee $160 residents; $192 nonresidents.
5:30 to 7 p.m., "Yoga in the Gardens" taught by Heidi Surace. Herbal tea will be served after class. Call Fellows Riverside Gardens to register. Fee: $9 per class.
March 3: 8:30 to 10 a.m. and 5:30 to 7 p.m., Yoga in the Gardens.
March 5: 1 to 4 p.m. Pysanky Workshop. This ancient tradition of decorating eggs is practiced throughout Central and Eastern Europe; however, the motifs and colors change between regions. Participants will create their own eggs in this introductory workshop taught by Mary Soldo of Struthers. Registration and fee due at Ford Nature Center by Tuesday. Held at Fellows Riverside Gardens. Fee: $7.50 residents; $10 nonresidents.
March 6: 2 p.m., Paul Labovitz of the U.S. National Park Service will share his experiences from the East Carpathian Biosphere Reserve. The mountainous region includes parks in Poland, Slovakia and Ukraine and contains vast tracts of primeval forest that are home to wolves, bears, lynx, moose and bison. It is also an area of age-old cultural traditions, including farming, shepherding and beautiful wooden architecture. Held at Fellows Riverside Gardens.
March 8: 5:30 to 7 p.m.,, Yoga in the Gardens.
6:30 to 8:30 p.m.: Introduction to Floral Design-Part 2.
March 9: 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Spring Landscape Clinic. Fellows Riverside Gardens, Ohio State University Extension, Mahoning County and the Mahoning Valley Landscape and Nursery Association will sponsor this horticulture clinic. The topics focus on innovative ideas for the green industry. Vendors will display current service products. Call Fellows Riverside Gardens to register. Fee: $40 ($30 MVLNA members).
10 a.m., Health & amp; Wellness Walks, meet at Golf Course overflow parking lot on West Golf Drive. Easy rating, 1 or 3 miles.
March 10: 8:30 to 10 a.m. and 5:30 to 7 p.m., Yoga in the Gardens.
10, 10:45 or 11:30 a.m.: Two-year-olds and their adult companions will learn about ducks and their babies through story, craft and role-playing games. Call Ford Nature Center to register.
March 11: 11 a.m. to noon or 1 to 2 p.m. The Shamrock Garden. Children ages 3-5 accompanied by adults will decorate a "pot of gold" for the emerald shamrock plant that each child will take home. Share a snack and St. Patrick's Day folklore. Call Fellows Riverside Gardens to register. Fee: $6.
March 12: 11 a.m. to noon, The Shamrock Garden.
10 a.m.: Servants of the Map. Read Andrea Barrett's much acclaimed collection of stories and novellas, and join this naturalist-led discussion. Meet at Ford Nature Center.
1:30 to 3 p.m.: Children ages 6 and up with their adult companions will learn to make dyes from plant material before decorating eggs to carry home in baskets of live grass. Call Fellows Riverside Gardens to register. Fee: $9.
March 13: 2 p.m., Hike around Lake Cohasset in celebration of mud and the warmer weather it foretells. Meet at Ford Nature Center. Moderate difficulty, 3 miles.
March 15: 5:30 to 7 p.m., Yoga in the Gardens
6:30 to 8:30 p.m., Introduction to Floral Design-Part 2.
March 17: 8:30 to 10 a.m. and 5:30 to 7 p.m., Yoga in the Gardens.
March 18: 7:30 to 10 a.m., view highlights of the seasonal changes that abound in the Fellows Riverside Gardens on this brisk walk. Return to the Garden Cafe, and enjoy a light breakfast while learning about the family of plants that include shamrocks and sorrel. Call FRG to register. Fee: $6 residents; $8 nonresidents.
March 18: 10 a.m. or 12:30 p.m.; or March 19 1 p.m. preschoolers ages 3-5 with their parents or guardians will learn about spring birds. Activities include a walk outdoors to search for signs of spring. Preregister at Ford Nature Center. Meet at Birch Hill Cabin. Fee: $2 residents; $3 nonresidents.
March 19: 10 a.m. to noon, Marie Borocz will guide you step by step to create an attractive spring centerpiece arrangement featuring a variety of colors for your holiday table. Call FRG to register. Fee: $25 residents; $32 nonresidents.
March 19: 11:30, the annual "Easter Eggstravaganza" begins with the egg hunt for candy, toys and prizes for children 4-10. There will be a special area for children ages 2-3. The raw egg toss for adults follows the children's hunt. Held rain or shine on the Morley Pavilion lawn in the Wick Recreation Area.
March 20: 2 p.m. Hike along the Mill Creek Gorge to observe signs of spring's arrival. Meet at Lanterman's Mill parking lot. Moderate difficulty, 2 miles.
March 22: 5:30 to 7 p.m., Yoga in the Gardens
6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Introduction to Floral Design-Part 2.
7 p.m., Audubon Society-Mahoning Valley, Casey Tucker from Audubon Ohio will teach how to control bugs, weeds, and other pests with healthier alternatives. Social time begins at 6:30 p.m., program begins at 7. Held at MetroParks Farm in Canfield.
March 23: 10 a.m., meet at MetroParks Bikeway trailhead at MetroPaks Farm. Easy rating, 2 or 4 miles.
March 24: 8:30 to 10 a.m. and 5:30 to 7 p.m., Yoga in the Gardens.
March 26: 1 p.m., "Eggs"traordinary Stroll. We will collect petals and leaves and use them to decorate eggs for the holiday. Meet at Ford Nature Center. Easy rating, 1 mile.
March 27: Noon, 1:30 and 3 p.m., celebrate Easter at FRG with a buffet catered by The Georgetown. After the buffet, take a walk in the gardens. Call FRG to register. Fee: $14.50 adults, $8.95 children (12 and under).
March 29: 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., beautifully presented salads for all participants to enjoy are highlighted on this evening's menu. David Armstrong will teach you to prepare three marvelous entrees: fried greens with shrimp, tandoori chicken on spring greens, and salad primavera. Call FRG to register. Fee: $32 ($25 Friends of Fellows Riverside Garden members).
March 31: 8:30 to 10 a.m. and 5:30 to 7 p.m., Yoga in the Gardens.
Tuesday through March 31: Registration for the Children's Summer Vegetable Gardening Program, the hands-on gardening program for children who have completed first grade. Each child will have his or her own 3 x 10-foot garden at the MetroParks Farm to tend all summer. Classes meet from 9 to 11 a.m. April 9, April 30 and May 21. Beginning June 15 children will meet every Wednesday morning through Aug. 24. The final class will be Sept. 17. Scholarships are available. Call Fellows Riverside Gardens to register. Fee: $70 residents; $85 nonresidents.
