YOUNGSTOWN -- Committee and team captains participating in the annual Hispanic Relay for Life event will have a meeting at 5:30 p.m. March 1 at Organizacion Civica y Cultural Hispana Americana, 3660 Shirley Road. Cocaine charge not filed
YOUNGSTOWN -- A charge of possession of cocaine was not filed against Joy L. Rios, 45, of Oregon Avenue, a spokesman in the municipal court clerk's office said. Rios was arrested after being stopped at 3:40 a.m. Feb. 13 on Mahoning Avenue when police noticed no light over the rear license plate of the Oldsmobile she was driving. The plates on the Oldsmobile were registered to a Chrysler and had expired in December 2004, police said. Rios was arrested on charges of possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of powdered cocaine, no rear license plate light and fictitious plates. The possession of cocaine charge was not filed with the court. Rios was arraigned Feb. 14 on the drug paraphernalia and traffic charges and bond was set at $2,000, the clerk's office said. She is to be back in court Friday.
Elks' window shattered
YOUNGSTOWN -- A glass-block window was smashed out to gain entry to the Buckeye Elks, 421 North Ave., around 2:50 a.m. Monday, police said. The intruder also tampered with the electric box on the side of the building. Any loss would be reported after an inventory is done.
Bullet fired at house
YOUNGSTOWN -- Someone fired a gun into a house in the 900 block of Cameron Avenue at 3:20 a.m. Monday. The bullet traveled through a living room window and struck a bedroom wall. Police are investigating a report that the shooting involved threats made to one of the home's residents.
Beatitude's $5K grant
YOUNGSTOWN -- Beatitude House has received a $5,000 grant from the Community Services Foundation of the Episcopal Dioceses of Ohio. The money will be used to provide support to homeless and disadvantaged women and children in the Mahoning Valley. Beatitude House, a not-for-profit organization started in 1991, provides transitional housing for homeless women with children and an education/career preparation program for homeless and other disadvantaged women in Mahoning and Trumbull counties. During the last year, Beatitude House has helped nearly 300 women and children. Anyone interested in supporting Beatitude House should call (330) 744-3147. Mercer projects funded
GREENVILLE, Pa. -- State Sen. Bob Robbins of Greenville, R-50th, announced the awarding of $74,000 in state Department of Community and Economic Development grants to aid community revitalization projects in Mercer County: Greenville Area Economic Development Corp. -- $10,000 to develop a Web site as part of a coordinated marketing strategy to promote the Greenville area as a place to locate a family or business; Greenville-Reynolds Development Corp. -- $42,000 to replace wetland earlier eliminated in the Reynolds North Business Park for job creation. Until replaced, state officials will not grant GRDC any permits to develop new properties and bring in new employers; Mercer County Joint Sewage Agency -- $12,000 to assist with agency expenses; Mercer County Historical Society -- $10,000 to refurbish the landmark Thomas McCain Print Shop in Mercer into viable museum space.
