CELEBRATIONS
XA St. David's Day celebration will be held Saturday at Epworth United Methodist Church, 805 E. Washington St., New Castle, Pa., beginning with a social at 3 p.m. Welsh tenor Geraint Wilkes will teach a session on how to sing in Welsh at 3:30, and he'll serve as master of ceremonies and conduct the Gymanfa Ganu at 4. Alissa Pesavento will perform on the harp, and Lois Hopkins will provide accompaniment for the event. A prime rib dinner will be served at 5; cost is $18 per person, and checks made out to Lawrence County St. David's Committee should be mailed to Debbie McHattie, 409 Clen-Moore Blvd., New Castle, Pa. 16105, as soon as possible. No reservations are required for the song fest.
XSt. David's Society of Youngstown will hold its 114th annual St. David's Day banquet on Saturday at Western Reserve United Methodist Church, 4580 Canfield Road, Canfield. The event will begin at 4 p.m. with the traditional Gymanfa Ganu (song fest) led by Nelson Llewellyn with accompaniment by Sally Sampson. The banquet will get under way at 5. Featured will be a Swiss steak dinner and presentations of Welsh man and woman of the year to Tom Kotsol of Campbell and Rhea Crump of Youngstown. FUND-RAISERS
XChildren's Rehabilitation Center of Warren will host a "Reds, Whites and Blues" benefit wine-tasting event from 7 to 10 p.m. March 12 at the Holiday Inn MetroPlex Centre, 1620 Motor Inn Drive, Liberty. Fine wines, hors d'oeuvres, jazz and blues music, and a silent auction will be featured. Advance tickets are $50 and can be obtained by calling Virginia Paris at (330) 856-2107 Ext. 121. Tickets will be sold at the door for $55. Proceeds will benefit the center in its work to provide physical, occupational, infant and speech therapies, counseling and support services to medically fragile and disabled children and their families in northeastern Ohio. The event will be sponsored by Home Savings and Loan Co. and Butler Wick & amp; Co.
XE.J. Blott Relay for Life will hold a family game day from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday in the multipurpose room at E.J. Blott Elementary School, 4115 Shady Road, Liberty, to benefit the American Cancer Society. Cost is $5 for a 10-game/food ticket. Tickets will be available at the door. All children must be accompanied by an adult.
XImmaculate Conception School is holding its 14th annual benefit dinner and silent auction at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Social Hall, 343 Via Mount Carmel, Youngstown, to raise funds for tuition for low-income families with children attending the school. Frank Marzullo of WFMJ-TV 21 will serve as master of ceremonies. Tickets are $100 per person, two for $175 or a table of eight for $650. XVictory Christian School, 2053 Pleasant Valley Road, Liberty Township, is hosting its sixth annual benefit auction and chicken dinner on March 4. The dinner will be served from 5 to 6:30 p.m. and tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for children 4 to 12 and free for those 3 and under. Admission to the auction is free. RAFFLES
XSt. Joseph School and its Home and School Association will sponsor its annual basket raffle and Chinese auction on Sunday at the school social hall, 4565 New Road, Austintown. Doors open at noon, and drawings begin at 2 p.m. Tickets are $3 per sheet of 25 and can be purchased at the door.
SPECIAL EVENTS
XLordstown Historical Society is seeking crafters, antique dealers, collectors and organizations interested in participating in its Lordstown Heritage Day to be held June 18 at Founders Park, corner of Salt Springs Road and Tod Avenue, in the village. The one-day event will also feature demonstrations, food, music, activities for children, and informative discussions to be held in the one-room schoolhouse museum. TOURNAMENTS
XPoland Community Baseball Association will sponsor a Texas Hold 'Em Poker Tournament on Saturday at the Poland Knights of Columbus Hall on Route 224.
