EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) -- Michigan State used the energy provided by a school-record crowd to post one of the biggest wins in its history.
Kristin Haynie made two free throws with 5.4 seconds remaining and the ninth-ranked Spartans beat No. 2 Ohio State 66-64 in front of 14,066 fans at Breslin Center on Sunday. The win leaves Michigan State (24-3, 13-2 Big Ten) in a first-place tie atop the Big Ten standings with No. 24 Penn State with one game left to play.
The arena began filling up about two hours before tipoff, and the fans were loud throughout the game. Students ran onto the court after the final buzzer.
"It was a shocker when they rushed out and jumped on us," said Haynie, who led Michigan State with 19 points and seven steals. "That was great support."
With the scored tied at 64, Haynie drove the lane and was fouled by Ashley Allen to set up the winning free throws.
Buckeyes final shot misses
Ohio State's Brandie Hoskins missed a midrange jumper as time expired, snapping the Buckeyes' winning streak at 14 games.
"She had a good look at the basket," Ohio State coach Jim Foster said. "You couldn't ask for better."
It was the eighth straight win for Michigan State, which improved to 12-0 at home.
The loss ruined an outstanding performance by Ohio State center Jessica Davenport, who had 19 points, 13 rebounds and tied a school record with 12 blocks.
Caity Matter had 20 points and Hoskins added 17 for the Buckeyes (25-3, 12-2).
Lindsay Bowen scored 16 points for Michigan State, which broke the record for wins in a season set in 1976-77. Kelli Roehrig added 14.
Spartans had command early
Michigan State led by as many as 12 points in the first half. But Ohio State cut the lead to 38-36 at the break and took a 57-54 advantage with about six minutes remaining.
But 19 turnovers cost the Buckeyes.
"If we were tennis players, we hit the ball in the net too much," Foster said. "Too many unforced errors."
The Spartans are 8-1 against ranked teams, with the only loss coming Jan. 6 at Ohio State, 68-54.
Michigan State finishes the regular season by playing host to last-place Michigan on Wednesday. A win would give the Spartans at least a share of their first Big Ten title since 1996-97 -- the only conference title in program history.
Ohio State was the highest-rated opponent ever beaten by Michigan State.
"It's a slugfest. It's real physical," coach Joanne P. McCallie said. "That's what it takes to win a game like this."
Purdue next for Buckeyes
Ohio State finishes the regular season Thursday at Purdue and plays host to Penn State Feb. 27.
Sunday's game featured the top two scoring teams in the Big Ten. Ohio State entered the game averaging 74.1, while Michigan State was scoring 71.9.
The Buckeyes also lead the nation in shooting, hitting 52 percent from the field this season. They made 49.1 percent of their shots Sunday.
Michigan State shot 37.7 percent from the floor but committed just nine turnovers.
