TRUMBULL COUNTY Black achievers to induct 8

State Sen. Miller will be the keynote speaker.
WARREN -- Six adults and two teenagers will be honored Saturday for their leadership and positive impact on the community.
The Trumbull County African American Achievers Association will induct the eight people into its hall of fame during the 20th annual dinner ceremony at 6 p.m. at DiVieste's Banquet Hall, 754 North River Road.
The cost is $15 for children and $25 for adults. Proceeds will go to a scholarship fund for local high school students, according to the association.
State Sen. Ray Miller of Columbus, D-15th, is the keynote speaker at the event. Miller served in the House from 1981 to 1993 and again from 1998 to 2002, and has been in the Ohio Senate since 2003.
The annual event recognizes black men and women who have affected the community through their leadership, community service, development, entrepreneurship, family development, education, religious-outreach programs and artistic talent.
Youth winners
The student inductees are Dawn G. Harper and Preston S. Kelson.
Harper is a senior at Warren G. Harding High School and the daughter of Donald and Yvonne Harper of Warren. She belongs to the majorettes, Student Leadership and Teen Summit. She is senior class president and has participated in several sports, earning varsity letters in cheerleading and track. She plans to attend North Carolina A & amp;T State University, majoring in communications.
Kelson, also a senior at Harding, is the son of Kevin and Alice Kelson of Warren. He has played football and basketball for the Raiders and is president of the Science Club. He has been named Academic Raider of the Year and received the Milton J. Mollenkopf Award. He has participated in Upward Bound for four years and in Project Read aloud. At Harding he is in the International Baccalaureate Honors program and the National Honor Society. He has been accepted at the University of Toledo, the University of Akron, Kent State University and Muskingum College.
Adult honorees
The adult inductees are Roselle Burch, Cassandra Truss, Bernice Molden, Michael McMillion, Wayman Williams, and the Rev. Melvin Howard Sr.
Burch is a Navy veteran who has lived in Warren most of his life. He works as juvenile justice liaison at Harding High School and as a prevention/intervention assistant at Rebecca Williams Community Center.
Truss, a graduate of Warren Western Reserve High School, is owner and administrator of Learning Express Preschool in Warren. She contributes money and time to area athletic programs such as Warren Baseball, LaBrae Vikings and Warren Western Reserve Lady Raiders. She has served on the board of Rebecca Williams Community Center.
Molden has operated day-care centers for children since 1970, including York Learning Unlimited. She has served on several committees of the York Avenue Church of God, Easter Seals Committee and Warren City Schools Steering Committee.
McMillion is a 1976 graduate of Western Reserve and since 1986 has helped direct many youth athletic organizations. He organized the first minority girls' fastpitch program in Warren and coaches the Harding varsity fastpitch program.
The Rev. Mr. Howard is a 1964 graduate of Harding and worked at General Motors for 23 years. He began his ministry in 1969 and was assistant pastor at St. James Church of God in Christ for 15 years. In 1992, he was appointed pastor of St. James, and has had a broadcast ministry for 30 years.
Williams is a 1937 graduate of Harding and served in the Army. He graduated from barber school in 1950 and opened Williams Barber Shop in Warren in 1951. He also owned and operated the Apex Club, a dance club for teens in the late 1950s.
