TOWNSHIP GOVERNMENT Springfield sets weekend for its spring clean-up

The township plans to pave a section of South Range Road.
NEW SPRINGFIELD -- Springfield Township's annual Spring Clean-Up weekend is set for April 30-May 1.
Township trustees announced the date at their meeting Wednesday. Large trash receptacles will be placed at all three of the township's fire stations so residents can drop off unwanted items.
A tire collection will be held at Fire Station 23, 13775 Woodworth Road, during the same weekend from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. for township residents only. A small fee will be charged for each tire.

Backstopping bids
Trustees also authorized Road Superintendent Richard Kennedy to prepare specifications for bids for blacktopping South Range Road from Brungard to Columbiana Road. Bids will be advertised next month.
Police Chief Matthew Mohn reported he is checking prices for a new police vehicle. The police department last bought a new vehicle in January 2003. The vehicle to be replaced has more than 160,000 miles, and the maintenance costs on it doubled last year, Mohn told trustees.
Recycling Coordinator Dorothy Keish reported that recycling now includes bins for drop-off of used clothing and shoes. Recycling bins are located at the water tank next to the fire station at 10720 Struthers Road, and behind the Springfield Township Administration building, 3475 E. South Range Road.
Trustees also hired Janitor & amp; Building Service, Struthers, for bi-weekly cleaning. They will replace Spring Fresh, Youngstown. Heck said the new service was hired because it charges less.
Trustees also approved a resolution to petition the governor and Ohio General Assembly to restore local government funding cuts. Springfield Township will receive $10,000 less this year than in 2004, when it received $51,842. Heck urged residents to write the governor and state legislators.
In other business
On Wednesday, trustees also:
*Approved paying $6,788 for four firefighters to attend an April fire training conference in Indianapolis and $3,200 to send nine firefighters to a fire safety inspector class.
*Welcomed Rachel Bradley and Debbie Massey as the newest members of the Fire and EMS Departments.
*Announced they will buy a $12,000 thermal imaging camera for the fire department. The camera can be used to locate people in fires and searches.
*Approved payment of $767 to Quality Welding, Springfield Township, for repairs on a tanker, and up to $3,500 to Corkhill Enterprises, no address given, for repairing storm damage to a storage building.
*Set a special meeting for 10:30 a.m. Tuesday to discuss department budgets for 2005.
*Accepted $700 from the New Springfield VFW Post 2799 for repair of monuments at township cemeteries.
