MAHONING COUNTY New Middetown council hires one part-time cop

Council also dealt with some property issues on East Calla Road.
NEW MIDDLETOWN -- One part-time police officer was hired and resignations were accepted from two others when New Middletown Village Council met.
Don Bova Jr., who is also a Mahoning County deputy sheriff, was hired and sworn in by Mayor Robert Carson. He will be paid $10.10 hourly and will be on the standard one-year probation. Two patrolmen, Michael Slivanya and Ed Aeppli, have resigned to accept other jobs.
In other police business at Monday's meeting, council agreed to buy a used police car with 110,000 miles on it from Poland Township for $2,200. The car is fully equipped except for a security screen and radio, which will be transferred from an old village cruiser, which will be sold for $500, according to Police Chief William Morvay.
Council also accepted the annexation of two small parcels from Springfield Township and detached one to the township at the request of Ohlin Construction. All the properties front on East Calla Road. The annexed land includes two small parcels just east of Route 170. The land to be given to the township is on the back portion of two lots farther east, just west of Struthers Road.
Russ Ohlin attended the meeting and said the action, which had been given tentative approval by council in 2001, will simplify development of the property.
Council approved spending $1,300 to send two firefighters to a rescue course in Dayton in May.
Council renewed the village's contract for engineering services from Thomas Fok and Associates, Youngstown. Services will be billed according to the fee schedule, which will remain the same.
