GIRLS DIVISION IV Tondo, Dolsak score 43 to lift McDonald to win

Youngstown Christian rolled to an early lead in beating Lordstown, 42-21.
LIBERTY -- If three times is a charm, then the McDonald High girls basketball team can attest to that old saying, as it defeated Western Reserve for the third time this season.
This time it was in the Division IV sectional tournament, as McDonald (13-8) turned back Western Reserve 62-44 Tuesday night at Liberty High School.
A pair of juniors, Ashleigh Tondo and Amy Dolsak, led the McDonald attack with 22 and 21 points, respectively.
"When those two girls get it going, it's hard to beat us," said McDonald coach Rob Hilbun.
Western Reserve came out and ran off a 7-2 lead before McDonald battled back to go ahead 9-8 at the close of the first quarter.
McDonald fell behind 10-9 early in the second period, then went on a 23-6 run to build a commanding 32-16 margin at intermission.
"We played twice before earlier this season and Western Reserve came out and played hard," said Hilbun. "We started slow. Their defense confused us a little bit and took us out of our game.
"We knew we had to get where we wanted to, so we begin using pressure and a much faster pace, that's our style."
The pressure by McDonald caused Western Reserve to make 20 turnovers with several of them resulting in easy baskets.
During the second quarter, when McDonald outscored Western Reserve 24-7, Dolsak scored 10 points and Tondo scored nine.
Dolsak connected on 10-of-18 field goals, which included a 3-point basket, while Tondo was 8-of-21 from the floor and 6-of-12 at the foul line.
"Tondo and Dolsak are our top scorers," said Hilbun, "but it was a total team effort tonight and that's a positive as we prepare for our next game."
Western Reserve (5-16) was led by 5-10 sophomore Alex Rathburn, with 12 points and 10 rebounds. She connected on 4-of-7 shots and 4-of-8 free throws.
McKenzie Mowery, a sophomore, and Saleena Niehaus, a junior, each scored eight points.
Western Reserve hit 16-of-54 shots and was 12-of-23 at the foul line.

Youngstown Christian set the tempo for its first-round sectional encounter as it shut down Lordstown during the first eight minutes of competition in rolling to a 16-0 lead.
The Red Devils battled back in the second quarter, but still trailed 26-13 at halftime.
The Eagles' defense again took control in the second half as it limited the Red Devils to four points in the third period and four in the final quarter.
Kara Cooper sparked the Eagles (9-12) with 10 points and Danielle Pacchia contributed nine.
Jennifer Bennett led Lordstown, which completed its season with a 3-18 record, with 11 points. Heather Wickline finished with four points.
