YOUNGSTOWN -- An envelope that appeared to contain a bomb after being X-rayed at the main post office downtown was detonated Saturday afternoon by members of the police department bomb squad.
A postal inspector told police the envelope was intercepted when a man surrendered to police in East Cocalico Township, Pa., reports show.
Beaver man foundshot to death in car
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- A 36-year-old Beaver man was shot to death late Saturday as he sat in a car on West North Street.
New Castle police responded to a call around 9:30 p.m. Saturday. They found Carmen Olivia sitting in the car.
He had been shot several times, according to reports.
He was pronounced dead at Ellwood City Hospital.
An investigation is continuing.
YSU student reportsoff-campus attack
YOUNGSTOWN -- A Youngstown State University photography student told police she was attacked inside the old Salvation Army building at 527 Mahoning Ave. where she'd gone to take pictures for a school project around 5:45 p.m. Saturday.
The woman said she was grabbed by a man who banged her head into a wall as she resisted and poked her fingers into his eyes.
When the man attempted to sexually assault her, the woman continued to fight with him.
He eventually tied her to a shelf, saying he didn't want her to see which way he left the building.
Traffic stop resultsin drug charges
YOUNGSTOWN -- Joy L. Rios, 45, of Oregon Avenue was arrested on drug and traffic charges after being stopped at 3:40 a.m. Sunday on Mahoning Avenue when police noticed no light over the rear license plate of the Oldsmobile Aurora she was driving.
The plates on the Oldsmobile were registered to a Chrysler and expired in December 2004.
Rios was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of powdered cocaine, no rear license plate light and fictitious plates.
Her passenger, Jodi Rummel, no age nor address given, was turned over to the Trumbull County Sheriff's Department after police discovered she was wanted on a felony drug warrant in Trumbull County.
Strike shelter destroyed
YOUNGSTOWN -- A striking member of the Youngstown Newspaper Guild Local 11 reported to police that a shanty shelter on West Boardman Street was destroyed between 3 and 6:10 a.m. Saturday.
The Vindicator striker said she manned the union hall at 219 W. Boardman between those hours and, when she left, discovered the damage.
Value of the shanty was estimated at $100, reports show.
