Bar remains open despite nearby fire

WARREN -- Queen of Hearts bar, 132-136 Pine Ave. S.E., was not the site of a Tuesday night fire and remains open.
Although the fire report listed Queen of Hearts as the location, proprietor Tristan Hand said the damage was really next door at 128 Pine, a bookstore that was about to open; and 126 Pine, a hat shop. The bar sustained some smoke and water damage in a game room.
Cleanup efforts continued all week. Firefighters used an ax and saws to tackle smoke and fire in the ceiling and had to force down a second-floor door, according to their report. No one was injured.
Firefighters are investigating the cause.
On Sunday, firefighters fought a blaze at 1061 Woodland at 8:51 a.m. that started in the rear bedroom on the second floor of a two-story wood-frame duplex. Fire officials said a mattress caught fire. The home's occupants, two women, escaped unharmed, firefighters said.
Fire officials are investigating how the mattress was ignited. No damage estimate was unavailable. The rental home is owned by George Koutsoundaris, fire officials said.
