MOONEY HALL OF FAME \ Inductees

Cardinal Mooney High's Ron Stoops Scholarship Dinner and Athletic Hall of Fame will be held Feb. 20 at Mr. Anthony's in Boardman. This will mark the 13th induction class. Also present will be Bob Stoops, Oklahoma's football coach who will speak on behalf of the Stoops' family. The buffet dinner is 6-8 p.m. with the ceremony to follow. Tickets are $60 or $480 (table of 8). Proceeds will benefit the Ron Stoops Scholarship Fund. For reservations, call (330) 788-5007. The inductees are:
Tony Congemi: Coached football from 1970-88, helping the Cardinals to four state championships, nine playoff appearances and 13 conference titles. He also devoted 27 years to the school's baseball team and has taught at Mooney for the past 35 years.
Bob Sammartino: Lineman on the 1973 state championship team. Earned All-Diocesan, All-Northeastern Ohio, and all-state honorable mention honors and was selected for the Ohio All-Star Game and the Big 33 Game. He still owns the school's shot put record.
Paul Reider Jr.: Earned all-conference in tennis four times and had the second-best record in school history. Was Steel Valley champion twice, district doubles champ two times and a two-time state qualifier. Had a career record of 82-11. All lettered two years in football.
Christopher Vecchione: A two-way standout on the 1986 and 1987 teams. Was two-team all-state and all-conference and was captain of the '87 state championship team. Played in the Ohio All-Star game and later was a standout at Youngstown State.
Tyrone Ware: A clutch basketball performer who was All-SVC twice and a member of the All-NEO team as a senior. Also a standout in track, where he set the school record in the high jump.
Joe Iacobucci: Led the Mooney baseball team in hitting and pitching as a senior. He hit .482 and posted a 7-2 record with a 0.52 ERA in 1976. He lettered three years in baseball and was also a member of the '73 state championship football team. He later played baseball at YSU.
John William Murphy: A 2-mile champion, he established school, city and district records in the event. At one time, he held the 2-mile record in every stadium he ran. He lettered three years and led Mooney to a second-place finish in the '67 city meet.
James J. Bertrando Jr.: He played two years of varsity basketball, was a pitcher in baseball, and won three letters in football from 1972-1974, quarterbacking the '74 team to the SVC championship, earning all-conference and all-diocesan honors. Later attended YSU and played for the semi-pro Youngstown Hardhats.
Shannon Dunne-Gamble: She is most proud of being the first girls track athlete to receive a college scholarship. She held school records in the 200 and 400, and the 400, 800 and 1600 relays. Two of those records still stand. She was the first girls track athlete in school history to advance to the state finals, in the 400. She later competed at Walsh University.
Thomas N. Detesco, M.D.: A three-year letterman in football, he started at guard and defensive linebacker for the '61 and '62 city championship teams. He was second team All-City as a junior and, while serving as a co-captain as a senior, won first team All-City accolades and all-diocesan.
Joe R. Barwinski: A linebacker, he was All-SVC and All-NEO and honorable mention All-Ohio. He was selected for the Big 33 Game. Joe later played at Southern Illinois.
