HIGH SCHOOL SWIMMING Boardman's O'Halloran takes first in 50 freestyle



AKRON -- Boardman High freshman Conner O'Halloran won a championship in the 50-yard freestyle, highlighting area entries in the sectional swimming meet Friday at the University of Akron's Ocasek Natatorium.
O'Halloran won in 21.97 seconds, helping Boardman to a sixth-place team finish.
Akron Firestone won the title in convincing manner, scoring 482 points. Hudson, with 241 points, was the second-place team.
Stow-Munroe Falls (216), Canfield (214) and Kent Roosevelt (188) rounded out the top five teams. Poland, with 60 points, finished in 12th place.
Three other individuals and three relays finished in the top three to advance to the district meet next weekend at Cleveland State.
The individuals were Canfield's Rob Frankle, who was third in the 100 breaststroke (1:02.91), and Eric Davis, third in the 200 free (1:48.82), and Poland's Cody Robson, third in the 100 butterfly (54.46).
Boardman advanced three relays.
The 200 medley relay of O'Halloran, Chad DeAngelo, Brian Worhatch and Mike Barringer finished second in 1:43.85; the 200 free relay of Barringer, DeAngelo, Worhatch and O'Halloran finished third in 1:31.57, and the 400 free relay of Barringer, David Shilling, Worhatch and O'Halloran finished third in 3:24.08.
Some area swimmers could earn at-large berths to the district meet, based on all the times from the four sectionals around northeast Ohio.
The girls sectional meet will be contested today.
