Hair-a-thon scheduled
CANFIELD -- The senior cosmetology class at Mahoning County Career & amp; Technical Center will hold a hair-a-thon open to the public from noon to 6 p.m. Thursday at the MCCTC beauty salon, 7300 North Palmyra Road, Canfield.
Appointments may be made by calling (330) 729-4000, Ext. 1708.
The hair-a-thon coincides with the MCCTC parent-teacher conference night, and parents who are attending conferences are also invited to the hair-a-thon.
Among the services to be offered are hair cutting and styling, wet sets, perms or relaxers, hair coloring, highlights and low lights, facials, therapeutic hand waxing and manicures.
Fees are based on the services provided, and all work is done by senior cosmetology students under the licensed supervision of Linda Tomko, MCCTC cosmetology instructor.
Proceeds will be used to defray expenses incurred by students taking the state cosmetology exam in Columbus.
YSU hosts poetry reading
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Youngstown State University Poetry Center will feature a reading with Sheila Schwartz and Robert Miltner at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the art gallery of Kilcawley Center.
Schwartz, author of the novel "Imagine a Great White Light," teaches creative writing at Cleveland State University. She is the winner of the Pushcart Editors Book Award, an O'Henry Award, a Pushcart Prize, a National Endowments of the Arts Fellowship and a Wallace Stegner Fellowship. Her stories have appeared in "Pushcart Prize Anthology Volume XIV" and "Best of Crazyhorse."
Miltner, an assistant professor of English at Kent State University Stark Campus in Canton, is the author of seven chapbooks of poems. He has written two artist's books. His stories have appeared in "Mochilla Review," "The Vincent Brothers Review" and "Mystic River Review," and his poems in "Hawaii Pacific Review," "EnterText," The New York Quarterly and "Artful Dodge."
Free GED practice offered
CANFIELD -- The Mahoning County Career and Technical Center is offering the official GED practice test at no cost and on a walk-in basis from 4 to 9 p.m. March 3 at the Educational Resource Center (at Southern Park Mall near Sears).
Qualified participants need to be at least 18, not enrolled in high school and have an Ohio driver's license or an Ohio identification card.
Passing the practice test qualifies participants to receive a fee waiver for the official GED test.

Student goes to D.C.
YOUNGSTOWN -- Angela Rovnyak of Youngstown is participating this weekend in the National Youth Leadership Forum on Defense, Intelligence and Diplomacy in Washington, D.C.
Having demonstrated academic achievement and an interest in a career related to national security, Rovnyak joined about 400 outstanding high school juniors and seniors from across the country at the forum.
The curriculum for the Forum on Defense, Intelligence and Diplomacy is based on actual world events, allowing participants to learn from the examples set by previous generations of leaders and encouraging them to develop their own leadership qualities.
Throughout the forum, students examine how the United States plans for peace and prepares for crisis. Students meet with leaders from key agencies and institutions.
Miller wins scholarship
KINSMAN -- Hannah Miller, a junior at Badger High School, won the Joseph Fichter Scholarship contest Feb. 5 at the Ohio Farmers Union convention at the Embassy Suites Hotel in Dublin, near Columbus.
Miller is the daughter of Aaron and Melissa Miller of Kinsman.
Hannah Miller received a $1,000 scholarship for her essay.
Participants submitted a 500- to 1,000-word essay on "What are the opportunities for direct marketing for the family farmer."
Essays were judged on creativity, topic development and presentation.
'Saturday Showcases' set
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. -- Slippery Rock University's admissions office has scheduled three "Saturday Showcases" to open the university to prospective students and their families.
The events are set to open at 9 a.m. in the University Union on Feb. 19, April 9 and April 30.

Students considering enrolling at SRU will learn about academic programs, residence life, financial assistance and other campus life opportunities at a resource fair held as part of the event. Sessions for individual major courses of study will also be available.
